Actually, for impatiens, I think it is pretty "usual".

Good job, Chelle!
I take a lot of photographs of seed pods, but haven't gotten to any impatiens spp. yet.

Thank You!

I tell ya, trying to get an intact pod indoors to get a good picture had me in stitches! It had been quite a while since I'd giggled quite so much. Hilarious! Even when you think you really, finally have one that's going to stay...pow, it explodes!

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing I can so relate to that! How many impatiens seed pods have I had explode? The little darlings are charming.

Delectable! Looks like nature took a cooking course in the far east, serving up a feast for the eyes if not the stomach, in this case. Lovey dubby

You can see the seeds right through their casing? Is that why it explodes, because it is so ephemeral? Are the curly parts the segments of two exploded seed pods, with one intact pod in the middle?

Really, it's making me hungry for snow peas or sumthin! Drooling

The curly parts are the segments of 1 seed pod exploded. There is no intact pod in the middle. You touch them & they explode. Water falls upon them & they explode. Wind makes them brush against a stem or bloom or leaf & they explode. An animal brushes against them & they explode. A bird lands in the plant & seed pods explode. Rolling on the floor laughing

Very attractive banner, chelle. I saved seeds from my Impatiens capensis last fall -- or at least tried to. I had seeds everywhere but in the cup. lol. My hair was full of them. A lot of fun!

This is what I ended up with out of all those pods. Hilarious!

This is too funny...I get the same feeling from this picture, and it's not even food! Rolling on the floor laughing Maybe we're equating the way it looks with a pretty veggie bow-tie pasta noodle, or something! Hilarious!

Hilarious! You managed to get more than I did, Tee.

I also tried collecting Pale Jewelweed (Impatiens pallida) seeds, and it was even more hilarious! Those were growing along a steeply eroding embankment...so that tossed in some uncertain footing as well.
