Making a Backdrop for Indoor Plant Photos

By rocklady

When my indoor plants bloom, DH and I like to take photos of them. Sometimes it is difficult to obtain a good photograph of them without a proper backdrop.

thanks for sharing your backdrop method along with your elegant photos! this is the sort of great idea that's so simple, I know I'm in good company slapping my forehead and saying "why didn't I think of that? a long time ago??" LOL

when I even think of the background, I grab something handy -- like a towel or a t-shirt. that does hide clutter, but it doesn't elevate photos to the level of art. Smiling

Thanks so much. Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one.

We have some epis hanging in our sunroom that are about to open and one of us is going to have to hold the board behind the plant to get a good shot.
Any day you wake up on the sunny side of the grass is a good day.

Jean: What a fabulous idea! I've heard of folks using black painted poster boards and black fabric as backdrops for taking photograph's but poster board is flimsy and fabric becomes wrinkled so neither of those methods works for long. I love your idea of painted canvas! Thumbs up Thumbs up Thumbs up

Thanks, Lin. I probably should have said that we tried the fabric and you're right, it becomes wrinkled and then you concentrate on the wrinkles rather than the flower.

I agree I agree with Jill, definitely art, thanks for sharing the tip.
Do you have to store it flat? It would be nice to be able to roll it up.

@CDsSister Rolling it up would cause another problem. We have some maps that we roll up and store in tubes and they tend to take on a curl. That's why we used the canvas stretched on a frame.

I have an epi that opens during the day and it is beginning to open today. It is in a hanging basket and it has proved quite a feat to get the backdrop behind it, but I am hopeful I will get some good shots, which I will post if they come out. The position of the sun also makes it a little difficult.

I have noticed several nurseries online using the black background. It really makes the flowers pop. Thanks for your experience and even more so for the beautiful pictures.
