Some beds here have walking paths so that people can walk through them. On those, the tallest plants are put in the middle of the beds with the shorter ones on either side of those. The daylilies are planted three deep. I prefer mixed colors and like using perennials ( especially those with different form, texture, color, etc) to give off season color.
Here are a couple pictures of the mixed beds with companion perennials. It appears that ALL of my verbena bonariensis was killed over this past winter so I'll have to try and replace that.

I like the look of mixed colors, however I know people who have a "white" bed or a "red and yellow" bed and use those effectively.

More companion perennials used w/ daylilies. Russian sage is tall, tolerates dry conditions and is a good low maintenance background plant.

Orienpet and oriental lilies are extremely fragrant. Also like agastaches, Liatris, and Echinaceas.

I LOVED my tall black and blue salvia in another area but fear it may not have made it through this past winter. No signs of life whatsoever, but it did come in late last year.

Cat, maybe it would help if everyone had an idea of what the area looks like that you'll be planting in? Different situations give you different options!

I plant everything everywhere however I like it as far as color goes. I do like to add some silvery color and lime or purple foliage too. I plant the taller toward the back and shorter in the front.
If I like it, I plant it somewhere.
I think the lighter pink colors are the hardest for me to work with in terms of dl/summer garden. I like pink in a spring bloom garden-daffs, iris, peonys and azaleas. But by summer I like richer colors.
I think the clear yellows are a little hard to place sometimes.

I did a bed once with nothing but purple and cream/white and it turned out really pretty.

That is beautiful, Frilly! I had a flower bed at my last house that was only pink and purple, and it looked really nice. There were almost no daylilies in that bed, but the few that were there were pink, and I tried to plant them next to dark purples flowers. It was a nice balance.

I also like having other flowers mixed in the the daylilies.

Cat, are they in the middle of the yard or on the edge of the yard? Depending on where they are, you'll have different options. Also, depending on how big they are, it will give you different options. If they are large, you can treat them like an island, with tall daylilies in the center, and shorter ones around the outside. Also, do you hybridize? If you do, it would be easier on you if you put tets together in one bed, and dips in another.

I can't wait to see what you come up with! I know it will look fantastic!

Well, their are 3 in a row towards the front of our yard. They are 8' by 4'. You can see them from the road. I am planning on trying my hand at hybridizing. This is all new to me so I am up for any suggestions. I live in the city so I don't have acres of land but we did recently buy another lot about a year ago that has NOTHING on it except some small trees and brush we need to clear. Hurray! I think I am going to make my seedling beds there. Whistling I will add a pic or 2 but mind you this place is a mess and in the middle of several projects!!

This is basically what they look like now.

These are the three beds in a row, that is our neighbor's house and down the road you see. We are lucky enough that no one is right next to our house on either side and across the street is a creek and then a rail road tracks up a hill.

Yes, I like that Idea. I think I am going to have at least one more added with these 3. Then I will have to start planting somewhere else.
