Whether you wintersow or start indoors under lights----it is definitely worth the work! A trip through local garden centers, and a boo at their prices for plants,
has convinced me that starting seeds early is worth it.

Not to mention that there are so many plants you just can't get unless you grow them from seed!
Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.

Yes, the selection is a hundred times better from seeds than plants at garden centers.

I rarely buy plants .. either root cuttings or start from seeds.

Starting from seeds is a great way to learn something new for the first year (or the first three years, if you're stubborn - ask me how I know!)

After that, it's a great source of pride when you look at your babies, and when you give some away.

And the best time to start many seeds in many climates is BEFORE you can plant anything outside. When everyone else has snow and mud and gray skies and cabin fever, you have a little carpet of green seedlings and bright light indoors.

I usually start my seeds indoor on heat mats the last week in January. Once they are 'up and running' I take them out to the greenhouse.
