So I have a question about this ... The semp is very nice. If it is a NOID can someone name and register it??? Inquiring minds want to know... Whistling

Patty the issues about submitting a plant for to name, is that a person should at least know one of the parents. I'm not sure why this matters but it seems to...I guess its to ensure that there aren't several semps with the same name in people's collections. Its probable that your NOIDs are because a nursery grew the plant from seed and so it no longer looks like the parent but it also is easily possible that labels were mixed up, in which case your NOID is actually a named cultivar, however name is unknown...hope this makes sense to you?? Its a good question! In my opinion we as "collectors" fanciers, hybridizers...would probably want to keep the number of hybrids to a minimum - with only really different ones being named. So - if you have a really cool semp that you grew from seed, and you know it isn't due to a mislabeling, I'd have Lynn look at it (for a start) and see if she thinks it unusual enough...then you can move up to people who have seen even more semps - Peter, Kevin, Toby (at Young's) to see if its worth introducing...several year process is my guess!!
I am really hoping that someone from our group introduces a new semp!! Hurray! Hurray! Group hug

some time ago we've named a very nice NOID at our german sempervivum-section; a lot of breeders and collecters took a look and they all were sure it is unique;

two years later we found out that it's absolutely similar to a known cultivar.....

what a mess - we now have two names for the same variety; Crying

Crying Oh Peter, what a shock that must have been. Which ones are they?

And there are many named semps that parentage is unknown. Remember the Skrocki method?

But I think Patty is talking about a semp that is mature, but name unknown, not a seedling in her bed.
Problem is there are many nurseries giving new names to semps that have lost their ID tags. That is a big problem for those that are serious about our collections being correct.

we haven't verified it yet....it's a single experience we have to controll;

the new named cultivar is called 'Thors Hammer' and it's seemingly similar to 'Packardian';

here are photos from Beatrix Bodmeier who discovered that:
Thors Hammer - 10. May 2014

Packardian - 10. May 2014

same substrate, same pot, same sunny place, same age;

Greg, I was talking about the one we bought as Laggeri that is now a NOID... It is such a pretty one! But now I understand why it can't be done. Thanks all!

Peter ooh! Funny I really wanted Thor's hammer when I saw it on your website, and I have Packardian, so...now I'm happy :P I tip my hat to you.
Patty - I know it is a pretty one! This is why I name it something with the name of the person or place I got it from, but that is just for my label...when sharing I let the people know its the wrong named semp! I also think by doing this, it gives the individual clones a history, and people probably enjoy that - I know I do...I like to hear when someone says "oh I got that one from so and so!!" Thumbs up I tip my hat to you.

Patty - yep! I just have to make sure that who ever is getting the plant knows that it is a NOID with a "given name" Thumbs up Rolling on the floor laughing I tip my hat to you.
