Can anyone give me any input on these irises. I have two types and they are both in pots. I have had one for several years. I bought the other one several weeks ago at a plant sale. It was marked 'iris, shade'. Both of these irises have narrow leaves. One is taller and has dark purple slender buds. The shorter ones leaves are a little wider and has red buds that open to a red orange bloom. Here are some pics.

The blooms are only about 2 to 2 1/2 inch across. It looks to me like maybe a species iris?? Does anyone grow these? Do they really require shade? The purple one has not opened yet.

Are the red blooms really only 2 1/2 inches? They look so much bigger in the pic. They have the right type of foliage for a species, but some Louisiana look like that too. I have some of both, but they are both in mostly sun locations. And unlike the bearded, they like to be in a good moist soil with mulch overlay. Keep them watered. Need to see the blooms better to really identify them but I would go only partial shade.

It may be a little bigger but not nearly as big as any of my LA irises. Here are some more views.

I am holding a quarter behind the petal for size reference.

Here is a photo of the one I assume is going to be purple beside the quarter for size reference. the buds are purple while the emerging bloom looks black.

I know you cant ID a plant from a picture but if you have a good idea what type iris it is that would be a great help.

In other news, today is my 1 year anniversary of joining this site. Thumbs up Before I joined here, I had only NoID irises, now I have 70+/- named irises. Blinking See what you've done to me in a mere 12 months! Grumbling .... Sticking tongue out

I think I've gone Acorn Acorn , because I find myself yelling at my irises to grow faster so I can start trading. *Blush* Oh, and I'm now suffering from clump envy. Glare

I can not bring myself to toss superfluous rhizomes when I dig up one of the massive numbers of yellow and purple NOIDS I have, so I have just stuck them in the ground where ever, or in containers if I spot room in one. (That habit will be changing Sticking tongue out ) Thought this container was entirely my NOID 'lion', maybe some Impressionist, too, but--surprise!--it is the yellow NOID (may or may not be Alice Harding) that blooms first every year. This one is my LAST bloom stalk for the year, so it was a big surprise. Fun stuff. Smiling

Debra,

The end of bloom season is always a bit of a downer, but that's a beautiful surprise to end with. Does Alice Harding have ruffles like that?

How fun, it may be something I didn't know I had! Smiling Arlyn, I checked and this one does not have purple based foliage like the masses do, so maybe... Hurray!

I went out between drippy skies to cut some bloom stalks and do general garden work and this seed pod is beginning on Dazzling Sarah.

Thumb of 2014-05-09/grannysgarden/e3b68d

it sure grew fast as I look at them every day. Is this a seed pod or is it a fake pod?
