Mary Ann-the beard should be Saturday Night Live. If anyone grows it I'd like a comparison. Some of mine seem to have a slightly different beard pattern.
Here is a subtle one, note the color change in the beard from top to bottom [or is it shadowing?] that would be missed without high detail:

Really nice ! I'm in the same boat as you, I think, Jo Ann. A better camera would help ( and so would steadier hands!). I did take this shot yesterday, just 'cause I thought the "throat", and beards were the best part of the iris !;

Cinta, I hold my breath. I have a Canon small hand held. cropping sometimes gives me a good closeup but not as close as the above beards.
