I bought this little plant at a local nursery and wondered what it is. The leaves remind me of figs, but they are very thin and there is no smell. There was a whole tray of them in the nursery and none had labels, and the owner of the nursery said that she didn't know what they were (her daughter did some of the planting).

I keep thinking it looks like an Hibiscus or Malva or something like that.

I'm thinking I will call the nursery and see if the lady's daughter is available and knows what it is.

Here's an update on the plant. The lady who owns the nursery asked her daughter (who planted them) and it is apparently a luffa! I've never seen one but I thought it would be more vine-like.

Thank you, Stone. I would like to grow luffa some time (but it might need a longer summer than we get up here) but I always liked hibiscus tea when I lived in the Caribbean, they called it Sorrel there.

I agree, not a Luffa; not L. acutangula (ridged) nor L. cylindrica (smooth). Perhaps the daughter is mistaken or received the seeds in a trade and the seeds were marked incorrectly.

Did you buy one of these plants? If so, we can wait for the flowers and/or fruit to make the identification.

There are a few Abelmoschus listed in the database: http://garden.org/plants/brows... but I only found one photo showing leaves:

Just looking at leaves it tricky. I have the Abelmoschus moshatus, I added photos to the Database. The leaves are constantly changing on my plant.
My Ablemoschus moshatus is quite short and the 'mystery plant' is tall, more like the Red/Ruby Okra or the H. sabdariffa.

As soon as the mystery plant makes flowers we should be more positive of the ID.
This is one of the 'funnest' IDs recently. Hilarious!
