I don't have any pictures but can get one but it has a very big green leaf and actually has runners. If you leave one piece in the ground it will make another one. I don't mind as I have places to fill but want to collect other EE's and don't want to duplicate what I have.

Thank You!

It sounds more like Cannas than the Colocasia esculenta bulbs I call elephant ears, though other plants may share that name and I just don't know about it, or about the plants. I'd like to see a pic too!

Well, there are EEars that are runners, growing stems along the top of the soil, too. Most of the Aroids with those ear-shaped leaves fall under the common name. Some people even call Caladiums elephant ears! (they must have seen a diseased elephant, don't you think? Hilarious! )

We really need a picture to help you, Sandy.

Thanks, Elaine, yep that's why I'm also curious (and didn't put much stock into the common name, but that's definitely what I'd call the plant in the pic, for a common name.) The veins on that leaf look different (from C. esculenta.) No idea what it might be though.

Hm, any chance of a picture of a mature whole plant? The growth habit and mature size give hints. Might be a Xanthosoma? They are very common here, growing wild in the ditches if they get loose. My neighbor has a whole ditch full of them and they look a lot like that.

Hopefully Evan or Drew will know better than me. Or if @LariAnn happens by, she is the authority.

OK here is a few. I got these from a friend and the roots we dug where long and as big around as a pencil. They ran everywhere. The large ones have bulb like but if we let even an inch of the roots it would sprout an ee. Soon she had hundreds of little ones again. Dug those and soon there were hundreds more where small pieces were cut and left again. These are growning back after hard freeze this winter

Sandy, you could just go looking for some EE's with other colors of leaves, stems or with variegation to be sure of getting different ones.

There are so many beautiful cultivars, in an amazing selection of colors and sizes. Suggest you wander over to the Aroids forum and have a look.

I tip my hat to you. Thx Evan, just a good guess, based upon my neighbor's Xantho's and how easily they propagate themselves.

Have fun shopping, Sandy. I think you'll be amazed at what you find available that in no way resemble yours.

Here are a few of mine, Hilo Beauty, Blue Hawaii and Stingray

No, those pics are from last summer, Evan.

Sandy, all three of those came from McLure & Zimmerman www.mzbulb.com They're about $10 each. I just checked their site and they have a couple of nice ones still available, Nancy's Revenge (big, cream colored leaf centers) and a couple of other bright chartreuse ones.

I've seen some great ones at Home Depot and Lowe's, too so keep your eye out and join their 'garden clubs' for discount coupons. Sometimes you even get a 'buy one, get one free' deal!

With the cost of mailing or shipping it's hardly economical to trade plants any more, sadly.
