I asked Ursula to post her new pond on the pond and watergarden forum. I thought her posting showed some real imagination in taking something that is not normally used for a watergarden into something beautiful and functional. I thought she had put it here, but apparently it was the admin elves...

Thank you admin elves... I tip my hat to you.

Ursula - your photos are gorgeous.....please put your waterlilies and lotus in the database...your gorgeous plants should be shared with everyone.

Carolyn,
I thank you.

Here is the thing - I have always posted here to share with my friends, not really for postings sake, if that makes sense. I guess I will see how this continues... Shrug! Smiling

The thread belongs where the originator wants it. My 2 cents.
If things get moved without the wish of the originator it will discourage people from posting in the future.
There are reasons for posting, other than "it belongs in a certain category".

Well, it got a lot of page views after the move, but somehow I had expected that perhaps one of my new forum members ( besides the Mod) would have left a simple comment. It leaves me a little flat.

I was just browsing and found this thread. What a inventive idea for your pond. Looks very nice, beautiful flowers. We have a new GH ourselves and I really like your shelve idea. I have some pipes for hanging baskets but would have never thought of doing something like that. I see those type of shelves at the second hand stores all the time.

Holly,
I just pulled out my last year's moving-back inside thread for you. It shows my set up very clearly, and it isn't that much different from this year.
The thread "September - moving back inside" in Orchids forum
You might like the long shoe rack for smaller plants. The long white shelves are from Home Depot.
edited to add - I get away with those light weight shelves, because most of the Orchids don't weigh as much as regular plants planted into soil. Whenever I add a heavy pot with soil (see C&S ), I never place the pot into the middle of a shelf, or it would bend.

And related to the theme here - initially I brought the Tropical Waterlilies inside and placed them in tubs (where I now placed the 40 gallon tanks ) underneath the small species. I didn't think it would be so difficult to hold them over the Winter inside, since my greenhouse is very sunny and bright. It didn't work. All 3 Waterlilies slowly slowly declined until I had to throw them out. And the fishes needed a heater, so I pulled out a 29 Gallon glass tank from the basement for them. ( I used to keep fish years ago) .
I bought new tropical Waterlilies again this Spring since they are so beautiful, but this time I didn't even try to hold them, just kept them outside and they are slowly going. This is getting too expensive, so next year I will switch to hardy Waterlilies.
I wonder if anyone is able to store the tropical Waterlilies in this climate over the Winter and if yes, how.

What wonderful pictures and I really like your shelving idea. I am assuming with orchids in your GH that it is heated - I was just thinking it would be absolute heaven to have my morning coffee in there! What is the yellow orchid with the orange/brown spots going around the petals in the first selection of photos? Very pretty.

I have heard where some people will remove their tropical waterlilies and overwinter them either in their cellar wrapped in damp newspaper or in the crisper section of their refridgerator. Personally speaking, I have not tried either method and I would think in either case, there would/could be mold problems.

DH wants so badly to have the tropical waterlilies, but our fish find them far more tasty than the hardy waterlilies.

Thanks Ursula I will check out the old thread. I was just down in the GH telling Ric about your over the door racks. Right now we just have a few cold weather crops in there, broccoli, tomatoes and just started a flat of lettuce. Next spring it will really come to life. I will be trying to overwinter tropical WL's this winter myself. I heard you can wrap them in damp paper and keep them in a plastic bag.
