This daylily seems to be the last "big show" here. These guys are pretty tall at 4'. The rest are just a few flowers or are winding down. I've been pulling out the dried scapes and the dead foliage in the places that look ratty. I wish I could manage a trimmer without hurting my back. I would cut the dls to the ground after bloom so the new foliage would grow in and look fresh again. Can't do hand cutting to 250 varieties, so intermittent clean up is "what it is".

The Autumn Clematis is in its prime.

The gentians are opening on time but the Japanese anemones that usually bloom the same time have been open for weeks. Weird summer.

Looks like fall flowers are here. Well it is September!!

And the peaches are amazing this year with few worms (not sprayed). Actually all the fruit have loved the heat. I have 6 gallon bags of blueberries frozen and there are still more!!!

That was a trade on DG!! Just ate my second peach! Thinking of grooming the cymbidiums today for fun and a way to be more vigilant for spikes!!

Kathy, those peaches look fabulous..I had no idea you could grow them that far north! Lucky you!

It doesn't look like the papaya took a hit with the cold weather last winter..good for you Jim!

Looks are deceiving. It's just a fast grower. Normally I have papaya from spring to fall but this is the first crop of the year. These are on the female tree. The hermaphrodite tree seems to have been shocked back into the male only mode as I've seen no female flowers on it.

I've just returned from a Leishman family reunion in the Sandhills of NE. We had it at the family ranch that my great-great grandmother originally homesteaded. It has been in the Leishman family for well over 100 years now. I spent some of the best years of my childhood there and will always be a cowgirl at heart. Here's a shot of the original house in the center and the nearby lake and the windmill nearest the house. The sandhill have had more rain than normal this year. I never remember the lake this full. Here are some of the plants that grow in the sandhills. Very different from this part of NE.

Highway 83 from Valentine to Thedford and on into Alliance is one of the loneliest roads in America. Cell phone and radio connection fades out and gas and restrooms can be 50 miles apart. Mostly wildflowers, but my aunt and cousin had some great looking vegetable gardens. Of course they have to water often because the sand soaks up the water. I brought home some seeds of what my aunt calls bouncingbet. Some of hers were doubles. Not sure if they will grow here.

I knew folks from the sandhills of NC that always raved about their watermelons!

That was an interesting tour Susan! I've never been to that part of the country. I find it amazing that so many of the wildflowers do so well in other parts of the country...even So. Cal., if one gets to the higher elevations. Of course, many of them have been hybridized by the nursery trade, and will do well almost anywhere.
As a strictly West Coast gal, who doesn't travel much, I love these internet tours!

Wonderful pictures Susan. Kathy, loved the peach pictures. I grew up in the Sandhills of NC and although the watermelons were good, the peaches were fantastic.
