Bromeliad or Agave? in the Plant ID forum

This huge plant grows in the Botanical garden of Rio de Janeiro, I know the smaller one in the picture on the stem is Agave but the big one I have no idea..
it was without a tag.

You're pictures are absolutely stunning! The above (my guess) is bromeliad Alcantera Imperialis Rubra

It looks like a Bromeliad to me also and as JP suggested may very well be Alcantarea imperialis. The only photo's I found:

Definitely an Alcantarea!

I think Alcantarea imperialis looks a good match, more than Alcantarea brasialiana.

Wow it must be breathtaking when it blooms!

I would seriously love to have a larger property too ... a few acres, landscaped with native plants and wooded areas ... just a little farther south in the state.
