Does anyone know what is the name of this iris? A friend gave it to me and isn't sure. Thanks. - Joe

My first thought was Degas Dancer, but I don't think so. It's close though. It's very lovely.
Here's Degas Dancer from past years. I don't have any TB's open yet.

Does it have a sweet fragrance? I am betting on it being Acoma. This is a bad pic. See the clump thread or the database for one of my better pics of it (I am at work so away from the good picture source - the home PC)

Branching is right, though your beards are all yellow and Acoma's are purple tipped.

Leslie, I think you nailed it! It has a sweet lemony fragrance. I think it is Acoma although degas dancer was not a bad guess either. The beard is a different color than degas.

Although it's never a good idea to identify an iris by a picture, look at the top down shot in the data base by heart2heart. You can see the lacy style arms and their color to compare to yours. The best way is (as we keep repeating Smiling ) to get a known rhizome and plant it next to the NOID. Then you can see, does it bloom at the same time, does it have purple based foliage, the same height, the same fragrance, all things you can't do with a picture. Leslies picture shows purple specks and streaks in the standards. Can't tell by your picture if that's the case. Her's also has a half and half orange and purple beard. and more pronouced dark veining. Good luck!

True Tom, truthfully I don't know that much about irises. I'm a lily freak and starting to branch out a little if you will. I had gotten the iris from a friend and was just curious. I guess if I truly analyzed it as much as I would a lily. I probably would have caught the smaller "differences." Sorry if you guys are repeating yourselves. I just started perusing this forum more. I wasn't sure if weather has as much bearing on coloration such as veining and depth of color as it does with lilies. That was my first iris and I'm hoping to see my first blooms of 'devil's riot' in a week or so. Thanks for the info to all.

Joe - We do not mind speaking about the difficulties of identifying irises by pictures. It is near impossible. I rather have a better educated Iris fan (addict) than an upset one down the road when someone tells them that their id of an iris is wrong. It could leave a bad taste in one's mouth.

So right Greg. Especially if you pull the ID tag up and then stand there trying to remember if you have shared that particular iris with anyone under an assumed name. I will share any iris I have but it is important to me to know that I have represented them correctly. I don't mind getting an iris with a 'maybe' attached to its name because if it is beautiful I will love it but I will treat it as a noid.

Joe, I would suggest visiting various iris gardens and staying on sites such as this one until you see an iris that you just KNOW is match for yours. Then buy, beg or barter a rhizome and plant it in your garden to see if it is the same iris. The great thing about this site is the iris growers here have such varied tastes that you will see all types of irises from old treasures to the newest beauties. Your iris is just lovely and good luck with the naming adventure.

Tom - my picture is not typical of the veining on Acoma. If you see my database clump, they are much less pronounced. And I did bring out the beard fact.

Joe - is there purple in the foliage at the base of the plant? That will help tell if it is or isn't Acoma. I can't really tell if all the beards are all yellow in your clump shot. Can you check your blooms. If the beard is all yellow on all the blooms it definitely isn't Acoma.

Sure is a close cousin though.

Thanks Tom, it's fine I'm just not up on all the iris terms yet. If you guys came over to the lily forum I'd probably be doing the same to you guys!
