Both of those names are listed as accepted species names in the Catalogue of Life, so they are two different plants and we therefore have two different entries for them.

Portulacaceae includes plants called Purslane and Portulaca. Most of these in the above photos are actually called P. umbraticola and the paddle like leaves are what defines it and compares it to P. grandiflora. All over the country and perhaps the world there is mass confusion about the latin names and I have found even some nurseries are confused. I was given a lesson by a grower and this is my take on the purlane plants which I adore.

P. Oleracea = Wild plant with small yellow (usually) flowers and it is edible.

Portulaca: P. grandiflora = Showy, many colors, spikey leaves, double blooms. Called Portulaca by most nurseries and growers. Some call it Moss Rose.

P. umbraticola = Showy, many colors, usually a single petal formation but there are more doubles showing up. The leaves are paddle shaped. Called purslane by most nurseries and growers.

(This is what I posted in comments and I requested them to be moved to Purslane- wingpod plants.)

Let me repeat that Purslane is not the name of a genus. Nothing will be listed under Purslane in our database, except as a common name.

If some of the images in the Portulaca grandiflora entry are actually pictures of Portulaca umbraticola, please propose that the images be moved to that entry. You cannot change the name of the entry to the name of another existing entry. If some of the images in the Portulaca oleracea (not orelacea) entry belong somewhere else, please propose that the images be moved to the correct entry. This is the only way to correct the errors.

One more question before you throw up your hands:

There are a series of purslane plants listed in the data base as "Purslane (Portulaca oleracea Pazzaz™ Salmon Glow)". I copied and pasted this on Google and it sent me to a growers site that has all of these plants listed incorrectly, in my opinion. Do I just leave it alone since this is how they listed it on their site?

The plants are not the common purslane as found in the Encyclopedia or Life but they are P. umbraticola.

We can't really trust growers. They often label their plants incorrectly. The Internet's full of growers who still call their plants Salvia nemorosa or Verbena x hybrida even though those names are no longer accepted. Smiling

The Pazzaz series does have many varieties with blooms that aren't yellow, so that would exclude them from the P. oleracea species, right?

I'll change the species name in the Pazzaz entries to umbraticola.

Please don't hesitate to make other requests, Becky. Smiling

Hurray! Thanks ZuZu. I was afraid I was being a pest.

I don't trust the internet unless I check out many sources that confirm what one is saying. I also look for .org or .edu rather than .com when possible. Green Grin!

Yes, in my opinion, I have never seen P. oleracea in anything but yellow and Encyclopedia of Life seems to agree. And they are .org

The Rio series looked suspicious to me, so I looked it up and found that they're hybrids, so they shouldn't even have a species name. I'll remove the oleracea from those entries.

Rio is gorgeous and huge blooms but yes they are hybrids. I had several a few years ago.
I think I have moved what was obvious to me and am happy to help anytime you need my "expert advice." Rolling on the floor laughing

I'd love to devote time to finding photos for the missing entries. When it belongs to a nursery, how do I go about that?
I will also upload more of my own photos.

Plus I will be editing my article from 2010 to bring it up to date and fresher.

The Double Yubi plants are also hybrids.

What about the non-yellow images in the P. oleracea entry? Do you want them moved to umbraticola or to the general Portulaca entry?

Yes, I thought I had requested they be moved but I was struggling at first as to how to do this.
I believe they should be in P. umbraticola.

Whew, glad you got that all figured out while I was away!

If the photos belong to another nurseries, you have to get their expressed permission to add their photos here and also then credit them in the caption of the image by writing something like 'Photo courtesy of XYZ Nursery, used with permission'. That's why I asked if they were your photos because they looked like nursery shots but you didn't have any caption on them.

Hi Sue,

The ones I have posted are all mine unless noted. However I see that one was taken from my article and I think I listed the source but will make sure Sue. The article was written 4 years ago and I was given permission to use it from a grower. I'll do some research. I wrote the article as a newbie and it was on cubits at the time and moved over here to ATP.

I plan to re-write-edit soon.

Thanks to both of you for your help!! I tip my hat to you. Group hug

Was this your source? Two of your database images are posted here. http://www.swallowtailgardense...

If they are the ones that gave you permission, you need to add the to the caption. I can help you with it if you like. Thumbs up
