How beautifully you have combined your hosta plants with other plants in your shade garden. It all looks so inviting. Where are the Venero gardens? I have family in the Twin Cities and get down there once in a while and if it wasn't to far out of my way, it sounds like a lovely place to visit. I've read your comments about zone envy and seen the pictures of your blooming plants, and if it's any consolation, I'm even further north and further behind than you! Smiling

Hey Susie, thanks very much for your kind remarks. Yes I know how far north you are. I commiserate with several friends from Crookston also. Venero Gardens is just off Highway 7 in the Excelsior area, west of Minneapolis. They have a website - www.venerogardens.com. You will need to call or email to make an appointment to visit. It's a lovely place, and the owners, Jay and Dorie, are super nice.

Old gardeners never die. They are just pruned and repotted.

I have 2 smallish (12"w) Great Expectations to move and am wondering how much sun they can take. I'm in southern MA. One spot gets full sun from 2 PM onward in mid-summer. The other 3:30 onward. Both are bright dappled shade otherwise.

Evan - GE reportedly likes a lot of sun, but I'm not sure about afternoon sun which can sometimes be too strong. Perhaps it would be worthwhile to try them in large pots for awhile until you find the right location.

Thanks for the information Ann. Potting up sounds like a good idea and I'll do that. Sun tolerance continues to elude me and I think I'm too timid about testing it. I wasn't expecting sun tolerance giving it's a sport of Elegans, but it's definitely welcome news. I have another small grouping under a cypress where they get very bright shade and a little late day sun and they're very happy.

I will do more hosta comments for the data base this winter when I am practically house-bound.
