Polly, I thought it very pretty, but then I witnessed its glory when I went back and saw this:

It glowed in the light. Stunning flower. I was crouched, looked up, and there they were. I'm happy to see someone likes the siberians. I got the impression that people on this forum greatly favoured the beardeds. Was I wrong?

some of us are climate challenged as to what irises we can grow. I think beardeds will grow from sea to shining sea but my area, zone 7a, is too hot for some others. Even a lot of the MDB's can't grow here as the winters are sometimes too warm for them. I grow LI's and some species iris, bulb iris and blackberry lilies which are in the iris family. I love them all.

Pwinget, I think the beardeds get the most attention for the reason Bonnie stated--many of the folks who contribute to the Iris Forum live in areas where only the beardeds are successful. We tend to talk about what we know. Smiling Our moderator, PollyK, is a devotee of Siberians and has some lovely photographs she has contributed. I have some Spurias I just put in and am eager to see what they do next Spring.

Great! I thought I was funny for liking the sibs so much. I discovered that spuria in my bed and I was thrilled! Hurray! When I saw it, I had gone in and told my DH all about it. He was very happy for me, and at the same time, had no idea what I was talking about. Hilarious!

Interesting. There's so much to learn about these plants. I'm zone 7, too, but I know not all zones are created equal. While the winters here are mild, the temperatures stay low for a long time. In the summer, 70s are the highs. Farther inland, the summers are hotter and winters colder, but still a temperate climate. Though, this seems to be a hot year. We got temperatures in March that we didn't see until June last year. Last May, we still had frosts.

lovemyhouse, almost every time I see your avatar it is different. It makes me chuckle. I love it.

Weather can be bizarrely different from season to season and year to year. It was so cold here this winter, and for such a long period of time, that I lost many plants that had overwintered here for years. It does get over a hundred degrees almost every year and sometimes for two weeks at a time. without any rain the sun can be brutal. I have my LA irises in troughs and tubs with drain holes up on the side so that they do not have to be watered every day. They thrive in that condition. The bearded irises just take everything nature throws at them. The older ones get bleached, drowned, starved and packed in dry hot earth and most keep coming back and blooming. I had some very small MDB's on small pots on a north ridge to see if I could keep them cool and they froze into blocks of ice the size of basketballs...they bloomed this spring. smiles

Another Siberian fan here! Well, I'm a fan of any Iris, but I do find Sibs particularly graceful and endearing. And your pic of 'So Van Gogh' has convinced me that I need it, LOL.

Thanks for sharing these wonderful pics!

Toronto had the coldest winter in 70 years. Here, spring bulbs bloomed a month early. Crazy.
The man who owns this garden only grows/sells one LA iris. There must be a reason for that. I'll ask next time I see him.
Congratulations on your MDB's! What a delight to see beloved plants thrive.

I want to end with this one for today. It's called Barefoot Boy. I was at the garden all morning and every single person who passed this plant - every single person - either sighed or gasped as they exclaimed "Barefoot Boy". Not me, I just said "wow." It is #1 on my list to get. Unfortunately, it's a relatively new introduction and is pricier than others. However, I figure I saved money not taking a car on the ferry that could be used to buy 2-4 irises! Now I only need my DH to buy that excuse - I mean, agree with that logical conclusion!

I agree! It really pops against the deep purples behind it. I wonder what else would go well with it.

This one is Humors of Whiskey. I don't think this flower photographs well. It's a creamy peach - a subtle beauty. It caught my eye from far off and then I stood in front of it and decided I loved it.
