I have that in my yard! It grows nicely in the part shade but almost invasive in full sun.

I think it's a Thelypteris kunthii, aka as Southern Wood Fern and Southern Shield Fern.

Dryopteris ludoviciana and Thelypteris kunthii are both known as Southern Wood Fern, and both have several other common names that sometimes overlap. I choose the latter designation based on the number, relative size, and shape of individual leaflets.

jmorth,
So naturally my question now is can you tell us the" number, relative size and shape of individual leaflets that distinguish the two"? I have several named ferns and several that are not, and I have the hardest time trying to ID them. When I run across things that have different names it really confuses me. Confused

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Ctr site is a good reference
http://www.wildflower.org/gall... - used to assist designation.
Google images sometimes helps.
Seemed the toothed edges were deeper in the one I decided on. Several reference sites noted the similarities and name overlaps of the two choices.
When either of these googled, several good fern reference, id sites were presented.

Wikipedia also is helpful at times.
