Adenium 101

By gone2seed
April 27, 2010

I use the same potting mix for starting seed and for growing them to about 8 months. At that point I move them up to larger pots and to one of two mixes.

JT, this article makes it very easy to understand how to start Adenium seeds. It also helps me to understand what works for a potting mix and how to water. Does the Turface retain to much moisture for them?

How ols are they before you transplant them?
do you wait for a certain number of leaves or go on height?
Very good article.

A spray bottle will work. Just clean it out very well before you use it.

Ridesredmule asks>>>how old are they before you transplant?
I don't get in any hurry. These may stay in that kitty litter pan for several months.I don't go by height or number of leaves.I just do it whenever I have time.Remember, these are really easy and forgiving plants.
Audrey asks>>How much to water.
When you pot them they need to be soaked completely once. Then allow them to dry completely between waterings. If they lose their leaves stop watering until they start new ones.

Thank you, JT. I knew you would give me an answer. My babies are growing great and I learned how to grow them from your great folks over in the Adenium forums. thank you again.

J.T.,several months! Wow, I guess that's been ONE of my problems, I've been in a hurry and have been putting them in individual pots just as soon as I see two leafs! I think I'll adopt your plan, no big hurry. I guess maybe I've convinced myself that these things are super delicate, and I over compensate with care. Here's another question for you; given our super hot tropical sun, when would you start putting your seedlings into full sun? Also, have you got any planted in the ground? I'd be interested in knowing how old or big should they be B-4 planting them directly in the ground.

Jim, why couldn't you put them out and use a shade cloth over them. I thought about that. fix a little tent.

Jim,I can't plant directly in the ground as we have some freezing weather here every winter. It is Florida and our northern neighbors would consider our freezing weather a joke but it is enough to kill adeniums.
When to put them into direct sunshine?Well,I move mine out a little at a time. They get some direct morning sun from the very beginning.

Could he put them out in the Spring and then take them back in, in the fall?
I am afraid to put mine out.

J.T. I guess I've been lucky, I have quite a few in the ground and even with that horrible cold spell didn't lose any! They were all older plants when I put them in the ground though. Charleen, I have all sorts of problems with Muscovy ducks, and other fowl that seem to like eating my seedlings, a green house is the answer, but I'm just afraid of the next hurricane, I'm thinking of Chicken Wire but not sure our association would allow it. I even went and bought an imitation owl, but the ducks don't seem afraid of it. I'm gonna sit a rocking chair out there and sit on it with my shot gun, maybe that would work.(if I had a shot gun) The picture is of one of mine in a pot that I almost lost, but seems to be recovering, gotta straighten it up though.

Charleen, I have a tall leggy one like that also, I never took it's picture, I have it out by my bird bath, it's bloomed once already, maybe next time I'll post a picture. No caudex on that one cause I planted it from a cutting, now that I think of it, it was my first desert rose, and what got me started on these addictive plants, it and Wilfred, Bless his heart.

I don't belong to Daves anymore, so I'll try to look for them when you get them posted. If you want to cmail me when you get them up, that would be great too. Thanks so much.
