well, if we are going to talk fragrant irises I may have the most fragrant iris ever. I had a clump of Calling Card and Dividing Line planted close together. This year, after THE winter, both came back with vigor. However, a lot of new growth began in Calling Card. The blades abruptly stopped at 10 inches and began to push up bloom stalks. what now, I thought, oh well, we take what we get. A bloom opened and it is a dark purple.... probably a SDB. How did it get there? No other SDB's have ever been in that soil....but the biggest surprise was going outdoors and noticing a fragrance rivaling the honeysuckle in the holler (hollow to city folk) wafting about the garden. It was not evident where it came from as the fragrance was at least 8 feet all around the little iris. I have never had an iris so tiny make such a lovely addition to a garden. Although it is obviously a NoID, it is definitely a keeper. And, I have never seen it before in my garden. another iris adventure.
