I've been trying to find this plant for one of my clients. I work at a veterinary hospital and she lost her dog Bailey and I cannot find this daylily anywhere, I want a little commemorative plant and stepping stone for her. Can any of the daylily enthusiasts help me out for a vendor? I looked on Ebay, and googled till I'm cross-eyed.

TIA!

Good luck, and I hope someone can find it. I have a dog named Bailey too. She's the one on the bottom in my picture. It's a very nice thing you are doing!

That may be a tough one, Celene, because Bailey was hybridized in Canada and does not seem to have made it to US growers and sellers. Even if you want to try to get it from Canada yourself, it could cost a lot to get the agricultural certificates needed to ship plants between countries. I did see two people in Canada who have/had it and sell it in their own locales, but neither made any indication that they would be willing to do what may be very complicated garden inspections, certifications, etc., or to sort out what to do about all the extra expenses.

Let me know if you want their contacts, but it might even be easier, and less expensive, to buy a pretty seedling from the lily auction that is being offered as "all fans" with the right to name it. Then, it could be registered, though it would have to be named something a bit different than just "Bailey" since that is taken. On the other hand, she would then have the original and only "something more than just Bailey" and could become it official hybridizer (or not, but who knows where a thoughtful gesture might lead someone into a hobby).... just a thought.

Either way, I agree it is a wonderful thing to spread the joy through sharing a daylily to give condolence, and memorial, for someone like that. Group hug

To elaborate on chalyse's suggestion... I suggest naming the seedling as "Bailey's X", where X is some attribute of the dog that the owner particularly wants to remember, or an attribute that especially defined the dog's personality. "Bailey's Love", for example, could be one such name.

(I have three dearly departed dogs (plus a current dog), each of whom I hope to eventually name a seedling of mine for, so I have given this matter some thought. I have four names picked out; I just have to continue laboring to get the right seedlings.)

Oh goose bumps ... my husband and I chatted last night about what to name our first hybrids. I went for relative's names (his included) and he turned quietly to me and asked ... what about naming them for our heart-and-soul dogs that passed away a few years back. Lovey dubby

That's a great suggestion, Polymerous, for how to approach it! Thumbs up

Thank you all so much, I love the idea of naming one after her. She was a special dog to me, I picked her out for her owners.

One way to easily purchase an unregistered seedling that you can name and register with AHS is the Daylily Auction (called the Lily Auction or LS) first go to http://www.daylily.com/cgi-bin...

Scroll down a bit and you will currently see five sellers who picture a seedling they are selling, and detail information about it, also noting that you will receive all of the existing fans and can get permission to register it (sellers are Redcajun, Westend, Jim_t, William, and our own dear Spunky1). Be sure to only look at those items that say "ALL" and inside that say you can get paperwork from them to register (permission granted to you - the other seedlings that say "DF" or "6fans" or "3 Fans + Increase" are not ones you can register - they are just unregistered daylilies you can buy as a seedling). If they don't clearly say ALL fans and permission or forms will be provided, check with them through the site first - or you may end up with a daylily that they decide they don't want registered at all. Prices for the registerable ones range from about $20-50 plush shipping, and there are some very pretty ones listed.

There are also some sellers who do list their seedlings on their own sites, but I don't have an easy way to help you with that - it's a lot of google searching, and I've never seen any as nice as the ones on the LA, and usually when I happen upon one at a site, they are in the $50-75 dollar range. Right now there are so many nice ones, and reasonably priced, on the LA - usually there are none or just a few - so it looks like you are searching for that special daylily seedling at just the right time.

Let me know if I misunderstood and that you want to try to contact the Canadian growers - I'm assuming not as it would likely be a lot of work and expense, but if I'm wrong, I'll be happy to supply those.

Good luck if you bid on an auction item in order to pursue Bailey (something) or (something) Bailey! Thumbs up

PS- I bought one such seedling from Fred (Spunky1) several years ago, and it's awesome. It has developed beyond my expectations. I would not be afraid to purchase an unnamed seedling with registration rights again - and no I haven't registered it

That is a great idea! I need to find the one called "Tootise" for our little Miniature Chocolate Poodle that passed a little over a year ago. Her name was Tootsie Roll but we always called her Tootsie. I tried to make the spot where she is buried nice with a bird bath and other flowers but the daylily named after her would be Perfect! That's why we didn't move it when we built all my new raised beds. I am trying to add to it this year.

I looked that up last night after reading this thread. Funny I looked up both that one and the one for my love Pandora (Miniature Dachshund), they are both from 1983 which is a significant year in my life. I've got to find them now!!

Thank you so much everyone, I think we will have a Sweet Bailey daylily soon. That auction may do some damage to my wallet. I just discovered the spider daylily, and some of the other fancy ones. One of my clients is an artist and painted a daylily painting for me last year, she has an amazing collection. I never knew they were so diverse till I saw hers!
