Spider plants. About the first plant I ever got that was mine as a kid in OH, had it for decades, then my Mom put some in the ground here in AL - what a novelty, right - a house plant that is hardy outside. Fast-forward about 2 years and there I am, spending hours digging it all up to save her garden. It was clearly on a good start toward taking over the whole yard. I don't have any in a pot anymore now either.

Variegated Vinca. Holy cow it's pretty, I mean really very pretty, but also will not stop until it's taken over the world. Also dug/ripped up.

Snow on the Mountain has not been that aggressive for me , about 3 feet wide then stopped. The bigger problem is to much of it reverts to solid green by the 3rd year.

Here's the spider plant, not long before it was removed.

And the Vinca (about 6 little 4" nursery pots of plants put here about 3 years before.)

Anything called "ground cover" scares me. I don't plant anything labeled as such. Re: lamium, we're always run over by purple deadnettle, which is a lamium, but I didn't plant it. It's a noxious weed here.

The worst thing I think I ever planted was verbena bonariensis. I wintersowed it initially, grew it deliberately for two years. Now I've been trying to get rid of it for about 8 years. I pulled dozens of them again today.

Most of the plants people have mentioned have been nightmares for me for years.

Last year I planted one cleome - very bad move. This spring I spent 17 hours removing seedlings and now I see more have grown while we were away. I bought the sterile cleome, Senorita Rosalita this year - not as big or as showy but when the choice is tiresome weeding I will enjoy the smaller version.

I didn't know there was a sterile Cleome. I will have to try to find one. I really enjoy them, but as you found out, they are one of the worst reseeders. You will probably find them germinating for a few more years.

Yes, you're right. I have done this to myself in previous years along with Aegopodium, Morning Glory and the most evil (for me) Houttuynia cordata Chameleon.

I forgot Morning Glory. My association with it was brief. I am still weeding it out of the lily bed after 4 years.
I'm on the same page with everyone about Cleomes. Those plants have prickers . Hard to weed out after they bloom. I only grew them once.

Aegopodium....snow on the mountain.....goutweed......whatever you call it I hate it. Nasty never ending scourge of gardens. It may have been pretty once but now it is just a sea of work to pull and dig it out....I can never get it all....When I see it in a garden center for sale (!!??) I start muttering and get louder and louder - warning any who walk by not to even look at it....I tell them if they want it in their gardens to come over to mine and take as much as they want.... Grumbling

yes, garden center employees try to distract me with other plants just so I'll stop.....

I didn't know there was a sterile cleome either. I looked it up, information also says that it odorless. That was another reason I stopped growing it- I couldn't stand the stink! They smell like dirty, smelly feet.

This stuff about cleome is too funny. I have tried twice to grow it from seed. Not a single sprout!!! I guess I've been saved a headache Rolling on the floor laughing

Jo Ann - a brief association with MG's is enough to warrant years of pulling out seedlings. It looked so beautiful in bloom but then come the unwanted seedlings and unless a person checks two or three times every week, without fail, one will manage to grow, flower and provide more years of plucking.

Catherine - Never did I believe I could rid myself of Aegopodium but I did win that war, along with the war on the evil Houttuynia.
Thumb of 2014-06-08/pirl/c7e47f

Even last summer I found more MG seedlings, and since their seeds can thrive for 80 years, it looks like I'll be 150 or more before I can claim victory.

Karen - so far I've found cleome Senorita Blanca and Senorita Rosalita locally. Neither smell. This year I potted it along with a lovely salvia (Mexican Bush Sage - Salvia Leucantha) hoping for the stunning combination I saw at a local nursery. Photo is the last one. I'm guessing both will be much smaller than the last photo since they are potted.

For a few years I grew the Japanese Morning Glories. They were beautiful, but slow to bloom. The good thing about that was that in my zone they did not have time to form seeds before frost.

Thanks. It's even nicer now but the deer have been eating the lily buds so I have no idea what to expect later in June. They've eaten the hostas and the roses. No worry about having enough vases.

The deer also ate the tips on many clematises and the buds on Fireworks clematis.

I'm off to find more trellises (not for the clem's) to block the rotten deer.

Add Butterfly Bushes to my list of love/hate plants. They pop up 50' away from where I have three planted. Mercifully, one died this past winter and won't be replaced.
