Judy - Congrats! Did you have to get permission from the person you named it after and submit it to AHS? I am curious because I want to name some future hybrids after family members.

I have another question that maybe some folks can answer....

Many of my seedlings are first year blooms. The bud/bloom count is low on most. Is a low number typical of first year blooms or should I expect that kind of bud count for each seedling for the following years, too? Or does the bud count usually increase in the following years?

I always seem to have low bud count with first year bloom but I have had bud count remain the same the 2nd year and on others I have had bud count increase. Unfortunately, you just have to wait and see.

Cindy, I saw this thread from last year, and was curious about the bud counts on your 2nd year blooming seedlings. This is the first year I have had seedlings bloom, and the majority seem to only have 8-12 buds. Also would be curious to know if branching and scape height improved.

Thanks,
Gale

Gale - I believe that "most" daylilies do improve up to their 3rd year when they should stabilize and be true to what you can really expect of them. I have seen color changes and even pattern changes from year 1 to year 3. Bud count and number of scapes & fans also has increased in almost all of mine. If they don't, that is a good reason to cull them.

Going back to the color thing...if you ever wanted to describe a color to someone on an individual basis, you could always grab paint color swatches from Home Depot or Lowe's and let your customer/recipient know something like "petals are 'Tahitian Sunrise" and tepals are 'Snickerdoodle' in Benjamin Moore's paint colors" (I just made the colors up.) that's if the person is really serious about the color and doesn't want to spend money on a color chart.

I would agree with Becky. I wait at least 3 years for the plant to really bloom to its full potential. I have found that sometimes they improve and sometimes they just do not sadly.
