Does anyone still grow them? I remember them as a kid. I remember that there were black and white. Someone must still grow them if only for the rootstock for the fruitless mulberry trees.

As noted in another thread, I have a white mulberry planted inside my chicken yard. My thought is to provide the hens with some fresh fruit without dealing with the staining issue of the darker berries. Even though my little whip is only about 3' tall, it gave me one berry last year. It was a bit difficult to find a white mulberry, I ended up ordering online from a nursery down in Oregon - none of my local nurseries carried it.

I have many trees on the property (wild) Both the dark and the white . I do enjoy the dark berries fresh picked but do not where my glasses because all sorts of small bugs also enjoy them
I think the real benefit to the berries is the birds prefer them to my garden grown fruits of strawberries and blueberries, so they for the most part leave the garden alone.
I hear daily fights in the trees between the birds and even the squirrels

Cinda, I had read the same about cherries - if one plants a mulberry close by, the birds will chose the mulberries over cherries. The trick is pick cultivars that will ripen together I suppose.

To me it seems like they are everywhere because my last place came with many mulberry trees (in MN) and my current place (UT) came with two. Maybe it's just my luck to have lawn-jam and tree-seedlings in every garden no matter where I go

My trees are always loaded and seem to last a long while

I do hate the seedlings that come up everywhere in the garden and if I miss one for a year , the cut sapling will sprout Forever , unless you can it.

put a tin can or pot over the cut stump , with no light all the new sprouts will wither and die.
