I did see their intros, I think someone announced it on the AHS e-mail Robin. I think because of your climate these would be good for you. Big edges from down south do not open in my garden.

So did you check out the description of TRIGGER HAPPY?

Betty, I am not sure what I am supposed to take note of. The flower is pretty. The budcounts he lists simply do not happen up north here. I don't know how they grow them but my daylilies are not on a fertilizer drip. They have to do well in the real world in a real garden.

I don't buy anythying from Florida any more. Not because I can't grow it of it is evergreen or semi evergreen. I have plenty of non dormants. But I know what I am looking for and way down south is not it for me.

I have noticed up here in MN I have to be a bit picky cause some just dont like the -30 degree winter temps in January -- however, some from down south perform well in my garden here!

When I first started in daylilies my only question was will the southern beauties live thru our winters? I mostly started at Maryotts and asked Bill and he told me to mulch especially for that first winter and not to plant in the fall as to give them lots of time to get established.

So I picked pretty faces and mulched. I found out that they didn't die over the winter. There was more to it than that which I hadn't considered. Bud count for one. Most did just fine but I did end up with some that had budcounts of from 3-6. After the second year those ended up leaving. Still have Wild Cherry Roundup and Lava Flow, both with budcounts of 6 for many years now. Plus there were the ones that got hung up and wouldn't open. Best example of that was WONDER OF IT ALL, which opened about half the time but grew like a weed.

So I realised that there was much more to it than if they mearly survived, I needed them to thrive. Most of those first purchases from Maryotts are strill here and thriving. The problems mostly left.

But those Florida beauties kept getting bigger and bigger edges. That doesn't work here. Plus I had discovered northern hybridizers and I know that was the way to go for me. Yes, I do love to look at the Florida intros but I spend my money elsewhere. Not saying they aren't beautiful. They are.

Rita, I have much the same issue. I like to get out as much as I can and see other gardens. I really enjoyed being a Garden Judge while I was still able. Now, I only see three or four gardens a year. If I see one of the big edged plants I like growing here in Ohio, or a plant from a far away zone... Or even if it is from a northern garden, but they use a greenhouse a lot... I wait until I see the plant growing a few summers in someone else's garden before I buy.

I think the people in the south have similar problems with the hard dormants.

Floyd Cove catalog came a few days ago. Daylilies in it sure look different than they did years ago. I remember when Dance Ballerina Dance came out.... What a sensation that cause. And, Barbara Mitchell. Am I giving away my age?

What I see on many of the Florida daylilies is that the chicken fat edges getting to the point of being way overdone for me. I don't like quite that much edge. Everyone has their own taste and to each their own. But I do know what I like.

I always gardened and always had some daylilies in my garden. But I only got the daylily crazies in 2007. So even mostly the older daylilies were new to me and I should be plenty old enough, just not aware of fancy daylilies years ago.

Betty, do you have any favorites in the new intros? or any you plan to order?

Yes, I've already ordered XYLOPHONE JAZZ and LITTLE SURFER GIRL for September. I just loved both of them on sight, and thank heavens they weren't outrageously expensive for me in terms of new daylily introductions. And then Lyle posted one of the parents of XYLOPHONE JAZZ, BLUEGRASS MUSIC, in his Daylilies In The Desert Cubit that made me even happier. And there are others I would love to order, but I have to try a little self control at some point!

When I was at Curt's yesterday, the subject of Bluegrass Music came up in conversation. There were a few other people there. A couple people commented on how well it does in the north.

I wonder if the people who took over Floyd Cove (I can't think of their name right now) will start hybridizing for a specific look. When Stamilies had it, they had several programs going... the little ones of Grace's, the spiders, the Butterflies, the large flowers....

I wish I could have seen the Florida gardens "back in the day" when David and Mort were there and Salter's, etc. Travel is to difficult for me now, but I would have liked to do one of the Mecca tours. I hear seeing Floyd Cove is something!

Floyd Cove is now owned by Guy and Karen Pierce, and I've had a few transactions with Karen both through email and telephone. She is a delightful person to deal with, and she has an Aussie accent -- so cute! I don't know about their hybridizing for a special look, but she did say earlier in the year that they are going to phase out the small and mini flowered daylilies as they sell out and just focus on the large flowered daylilies. And since I just love the little itty bitty ones I went ahead and purchased quite a few that they had left in the spring.

Eventually I would like to purchase the other two little ones they are introducing, but probably not this year. Right now I'm waiting for my big order from Maryott's, which I hope to receive today. I became a fan of Linda Agin's daylilies which I was checking out toothy daylilies a few months back, and then suddenly Bill Maryott posted several of her daylilies on his website, to I had to order a few of those. Due to a mixup in my ordering I may not get BUTCH AND BARBARA'S CRACKED EGGS, though - drat!

It sounds like you had a wonderful time at Curt Hanson's, and did you take any pictures that you can share with us? I'd love to see them!

Betty if I were gardening in your climate I am sure I would be a big fan of Floyd Cove and all the other big name Florida hybridizers. The Florida beauties and the California beauties also would be the ones that should grow best for you. Very different climates between you and me and all that high summer heat you get. Congrats on your new purchases. I don't know were you are finding room for these as well as the iris I know you also get.

I don't know either -- I'll be potting it up for sure, though, and if I end up putting it in the ground it won't be for at least a year -- until I've had a chance to "play"...

Rita - you might want to start a separate thread about the climate problems. I really don't think you can lump all the growers or all the flowers together. I saw some really nice - and very southern - flowers that were flat wide open at 8 a.m. in Curt's garden yesterday. Maybe there will be some good suggestions for you for flowers that open really well that are from the south.

I remember when I had Shelter Cove - it was from California -- and it opened well here even when nights were in the low 40's.

Betty, I have one of the itty bitty Grace Stamile doubles. Little Wild Flower. It has some of the very best branching and highest bud counts of any plants I grow. I'd love to have others but have not seen any other ones growing up here. But, like I say, I don't get out in the gardens around here like I used to. Along my front sidewalk, on one side I have my "regular" size flowers, and the other side has quite a few of the little ones. I have room for more - just need to find some. I only want ones under 2".

Oh, I am very sure there are ones from Florida or California that would do well and open fine. But I know from experience that not all do. At least not in my garden. So when looking at new intros, someone else can be the test garden for my zone, it is not gonning to be me.

Juli, I'm sure you already know this, but just in case you don't you can check out Grace Stamile's little ones on the Floyd Cove website, down at the bottom on the/your left side. So many of them are already gone, though, and under 2" could be problematic at this point. Then you could email Karen to see if they still have any -- in fact, that might be the best idea from the beginning. If you told her what you wanted she could let you know if they still have anything available. I just love them, but I'm happy with the 3" ones too. Grace's Broadway series are on the 3"+ side, but they're tet's and I believe they're dormants -- and I love 'em. And Karen sent me really beautiful plants too! I haven't found many on other websites, and when I have they're at least as expensive or moreso, so I'm comfortable with purchasing what I can from Floyd Cove.

Betty, thanks! I usually do trades locally now for plants... Unless it is something really inexpensive. No longer being able to work does that to one's daylily budget!
