I have heard that a strong molasses solution will kill grasshoppers as well as other vegetable garden pests. Is this true? If yes, what ratio of ingredients do I use?

Hi! And Welcome! to ATP!

I've not heard of molasses being used to kill grasshoppers, though it is used for other reasons... http://organic.lovetoknow.com/...

The only control that I've used for the "lubbers" that we have here is the stomp. Green Grin!

From this site: http://www.ghorganics.com/page...

"Sink glass jars into the soil. Fill to the halfway point wit a mixture of 10 parts water to 1 part of molasses. The hoppers are drawn to the sweet smell of the molasses, they dive in and drown. Clean traps as needed."

Guess that is similar to the way a beer trap works for slugs?

Oh gosh, maybe you shouldn't drive the car today. At least until you calm down and drown some grasshoppers. Rolling on the floor laughing

Has anyone tried the Nolo Bait or other Nosema locustae based baits for grasshopper control?

I've been squishing baby grasshoppers constantly. Uhggg! Sticking tongue out

Yes, Nolo Bait works great but I think I am past the prime time to use it. So many large grasshoppers at this point. I am going to try it again to see if it will help. Anything is better than what I am going through right now. I was hoping for a bigger option. Nolo works when the nympts (sp) eat it and then larger ones eat the babies. It will cut down on the population but takes a while. Last time I used it was in late spring a couple of years back when all I saw were the babies. Good luck with the Nolo.

Thanks for the info on the Nolo, Jo! I may give it a try.

I just read a site where someone mentioned EcoBran. It isn't organic and contains a small percentage of Carbaryl (Sevin) but it is in bait form so should have a more targeted effect. I know nothing about it, but I wonder if you could set up baiting stations rather than scattering it indiscriminately. If so, that would help reduce the loss of non-targeted insects and widespread pesticide contamination in your yard.

I can sympathize with you, the bugs in the south are really hard to deal with and I hate using synthetic chemicals in my yard, too. Besides grasshoppers, the leaf-hoppers are driving me mad.

Oh, forgot to say... Welcome! to ATP! Big Grin
