Blackberries and Berries That Are Black

It's impossible to walk barefoot in the yard. The brambles are everywhere. Even wearing shoes does not protect ankles from getting scratched. Ouch!

Himalaya-berry or Himalayan black berry has five leaflets like what you show in your first picture. It is invasive in California. The berries are edible. I do not know what zones Himalaya-berry will live in.

Many of this type of plant has 5 leaflets. As I said I am not able to identify every plant which was gift from the birds. These plants often hybridize - who can keep up with all that? Not me; I just enjoy the berries, happy that the birds leave some for me, and cut back the plants when they get overgrown.

Thanks for the name Himalayan black berry as one possibility. There is a report of this invasive plant in Gordon County, northern Georgia 323 miles north of my location.

Oh greene, that was a treat to read your article! I had never heard of a couple of the berries you mentioned. Sorry I can't help with identification.

I loved the humor and enjoyed following your prickly detective path. Thanks for a good laugh!

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I don't really care if I ever identify the berries that are black.

Oh, good news. The ones I rescued have given fruit and the fruit is small, black and very tasty.
