The AHS Database seems to be extremely deficient when it comes to photographs of cultivars. I can understand a 1970 registration not having an image, but a 2006 introduction? Wow.

I wonder if they're working to fill in those many gaps. They must have photographs, because color photos are required with Registration, aren't they?

BTW the picture of sliced Rhubarb at the top of the ATP page makes me very hungry for rhubarb pie. Fortunately, we have some in the freezer......

That has been mentioned before, how is it that a photo is required to register and yet so many don't have photos?
Strange, but I have no answer!

Yes a photo is required but sometimes if the photo is not the correct size or the system for some reason doesn't upload it then there is no photo. I'm sure there are other reasons for no photos. There are people behind the scenes trying to get all the photos put in there but it takes time and if I'm not mistaken then once so many are done then it is updated all at one time sort of like when the checklist is done and the system updates. Before Kevin became registrar there were some issues going on but I don't know enough of the details to be accurate about it.

Only the hybridizer can submit photos so if they cannot get in touch with that person or that person is deceased then they have to try and get in touch with family members and such to get a photo or permission to use other photos.

you could always email Kevin Walek and ask him about it

Michele,

I was contacted about 2 years ago about using one of my photos in the AHS database. I do not remember who contacted me but they wanted permission to use my photo of Malihini. I said sure, you can use any of my pictures you need. That one is the only one that I know of that is being used.

I was contacted also about one, I can't remember which one now. If they can't get in touch with hybridizer, family, etc they are using others photos.

Since Kevin took over as Registrar in 2010, we have added an average of 6000 photos per YEAR, or 24,000 images. Prior to Kevin's time, there were only 8000 images in the DB. Due to the efforts of the Historic Daylilies Committee and others, over 5000 images were loaded in 2013 and another 4000 early this year. Please realize that images were NOT required until somewhere in the late 90's so there will be some we NEVER can get images for. And yes, Michele is correct, if a hybridizer is still living, he or she must provide or approve any photos of their registrations before they can be added. We are trying, folks!!

It is a very hard thing to do to get the photos. Those of us who are trying for ATP can find it a hard slog.

There is also another terminal problem. Many cultivars are most likely extinct or never photographed. RIP.
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

Sometimes you can get an image by using Google search, or even here at All Things Plants
If there is a picture out there, it seems Google will find it.
It's also handy to see images that aren't from the hybridizer's site

Yes, I know. Dave's Garden site is another good source. I recently sent to images of Marjorie Kinnebrew, and older McFarland introduction, to the Registrar, but they weren't acknowledged, and I don't know when or if they'll be used.

Images should only be sent to the Registrar if you are a hybridizer registering your own cultivar. Any historic images of older cultivars go to the Historic committee
[email protected]. They must be reviewed by committee before they can be added to the DB.
