If you want an ID, your "generic" penstemon is actually Penstemon hirsutus, mainly from the very distinctive flowers.

I grew sever types from seed years ago and didn't label them.
There seems to be several good photos under the specific name so I think I will just caption the photo and leave it here. I like to see a variety of plants under the general category.
