I'm really happy with this macho fern on my terrace, it keeps getting bigger and bigger. It took about a year for it to start really growing well, I thought it didn't like the location but I was reluctant to move it. It gets scattered sun throughout the middle of the day but never constant.



This anthurium has 2 blooms now, it is really happy here. I had it in another spot and moved it for more light about a year ago. My worker trimmed it really hard a week ago, more than I would have. It seems ok with it though, the 2nd bloom came up after that.

Macho looks great! I'm tempted to look for another one. Mine got so big that I couldn't move it. I covered it one winter but it just melted away.
I hadn' t thought about trimming anthuriums. Seems scary, like trimming your bangs!

I know, I was kind of appalled when I realized he had cut off so many fronds. The cats are in there all the time and they had shredded some of the older fronds so he lopped them off. He left one that is a little damaged. He also tossed out a bromeliad that had a huge bloom stalk. I was not happy about that. The plant itself was very bedraggled but I was hoping after it bloomed it would pup. ah well. I wasn't watching carefully enough.

Jonna that Anthurium is gorgeous, does it ever set seeds ?

The fern really is magnificent, Jonna. They do get pretty big, though. It may crowd you out eventually. I had one in the garden at my last house and the fronds were at least 7ft long. Let's hope yours 'seeds' itself so you can nurture a pup or two - you may want a series of family members to bring along as the old ones get too big?

Sandi, running for the trash was my first thought. But, he'd dumped all the green trash over the neighbors wall and I can't get over there. It's what we do when there is too much to compost or put out for garbage. There is a ruin that backs onto my yard and my neighbors yard. I take care of the neighbor's house since they don't live here and I know the guy who owns the ruin. One day he will renovate it and flip it but until then, I can put yard waste there. It is making compost and when he does renovate he will have some good soil at the back of the lot.

I've not looked for seeds on the anthurium, but I will this time. I did post a pic on the aroids forum but they say there are so many hybrids, natural and not, that it is impossible to say what it is.

You're right Elaine, these ferns do get huge. When the fronds start touching the ground the cats tend to play with them and I cut off the straggly bits. I have a couple others in the ground and they also sulked for about a year but are now starting to grow. The ones outside have pups growing around them so I have good supply now.
