I agree

They will eat grubs too and roaches, possibly scorpions as well but I can't say scorpions for sure as I have never seen one eating scorpions. The scorpions we have here pretty well stay hidden. It is funny how they all get quiet when you walk out there -- I have experienced the same.
Lucky, sound waves do weird things. I don't have any real hearing problems but have discovered sound easily bounces off walls, fences, bushes, tree lines & such. You can think the noise is coming from the exact opposite direction from where it is actually coming from.
Thank you for serving our country.

I do freeze the cuban tree frogs, I noticed one has bit the bullet in the pool. I do love frogs tho. Friday I was moving a tea olive, to plant a camellia. I disturbed a toad, poor thing, luckily I didnt shovel it in half. I tried to put things back for it as good as I could, Ill plant later. With all the cubans, I want to save every toad I can.

Here's a link that explains it somewhat:
http://allaboutfrogs.org/weird...

I also thought that toads are less likely to swim, living in damp, dark areas in gardens. But that being said, I certainly have a population of Southern Toads around my fish pond in the spring time. They don't hop in the water to get away when I get near them, though. They have a prolonged high-pitched whistle when they're mating, and usually the first big rain we get in May there will be a veritable rock concert of frogs and toads out there at the fish pond.

There is a good story to the scientific name for the Green Treefrog, Litoria caerulea. The first specimen was sent back to Britain in the 1780s by the then Surgeon-General, John White, of the penal colony, New South Wales. It was preserved in spirit-of-wine, which turned the frog's green into bright blue. Hence the Latin designation 'caerulea', bright blue, which they thought was its true colour back in merry England. Interestingly, White hated his posting and wrote of Australia as, "a country and place so forbidding and so hateful as only to merit execration and curses."

>> I lost hearing in my left ear from Afghanistan 4 years ago so it's hard to tell sometimes where they actually are.

I agree. Those tree frogs' calls seem especially elusive. They seem to be coming from all directions even when it's just 1-2 frogs. I almost never see them where I live, but I heard ONE a few weeks ago. He seemed lonely!

I cannot tell direction either because a tumour on my cranial nerve did my right ear in. I miss it very much.

But, if you have hearing in both ears the only way to overcome the ventriloqual effect of their calls is to direction-find. Have two people well-separated with torches listen in the dark while the frog calls and then have them switch the torches on and point the beams to where each thinks the frog is. Where the beams cross will be approximately the frog's location. At first, the results can be disconcerting because the caller is nowhere near where your brain is telling you. But often a frog stops calling because you have stood on it.

If you are by yourself, line a long stick up along the direction of your beam and then change position and wait for the frog to call again. Switch the beam on and line another stick up. Where you think they would approximately cross is where the frog is.

Neat, Glen. Thanks, I'll try that with my grandkids next time they visit. Not too many frogs in Utah where they live, but they love all the wildlife here. I have many sweet little peeping tree frogs that make a lovely chorus at night.

I can usually (but not today Glare ) find a Cuban Tree frog or two in the daytime as I have had traps set out for them for years now. They are a very destructive invasive species here, so the University of Florida frog boffins recommend they be trapped and euthanized to preserve the native species. Since I have a very attractive habitat for frogs here, with my fish pond I had a large population a few years ago.

Here are my "traps" - lengths of PVC pipe stuck vertically into the ground. The angled cut end digs into the soil easily. The frogs love to sleep inside them through the day. If it's cold they will be way down near the ground but if warm, they are up inside the pipe, very easy to see. I've never seen anyone but the Cubans in these, but I imagine other frogs might find them attractive hiding places, too.
