Both DG and Cubits are much slower than ever.
I can remember when the Coleus Forum was in the top 10 for the most post.
We had the best time.
Do you have a greenhouse this year?
Do you want some cuttings to overwinter?

Sidney I need someone to tell me how to set up my green house to over winter coleus. It gets too hot it gets to cold our season weather is not to be believed. We can have a thirty five degree swing over night. Cold nights hot days. I was not very successful with coleus. Saved some other good stuff, but just a couple coleus and they did not do well during season. I so wanted to be able to have a winter green house. But I am just not apt with it. It is truly the first day of fall today. The first confederate rose is blooming and it very cool this morning. Have a good day everyone. shirleyt

Pheadra I just realized I had not answered Shirley's request.
You would be a better person to tell her.
I have fingers in so many pies that I just spin.
Pheadra, I'm praying you get things all straightened out by next year this time.
I'm mailing some cuttings to Lavina first thing Monday morning.
Does anyone else want some?
Sidney

Ms. Shirley, I'm afraid I can't be much help like you our weather is so unpredictable,(sheez we even had SNOW in February this year. My cutting start out doing great, by the end of december they are all but gone. I have had better luck with full size Coleus plants. We just dig'em up and plop them in a container as many as it will hold. DH will open all the doors before he leaves for work no matter what the temp is outside at the time beacuse we know that within minutes with the sun it gets to hot in the greenhouse.

Hi, been missing you guys. I am gonna try this year to save some plants. I did ok last year with everything but coleus. Stuff died back but came back from the root systems. I expected them to stay nice in there. I think I forgot to water when it was really cold. Pheadra we had several snow days here last year. It is perfect temperature here now but it has not rained in ages. The grass is even dying. The deck still looks good but I water it often. I am so sorry about your green house, I know how much you loved it. Alice how is it there. I guess you are cold now. Sidney did they take over your corner yet. Maybe it will take them a while to get around to doing it. Everything usually moves very slow. Have a great weekend. Football......LSU, Saints Yeah. Northshore VB. Yeah. I just watch on TV. shirleyt

Did someone say snow? You southerners don't know what snow is. This was my yard last winter, and it looked like this for weeks. Or was it months??? I thought last winter would never end.

Hi all!
Thanks Shirley, miss you too! I'm doing fine now, but has been very slow for 2 mths now, depending to too much work. All coleus are indoors now, and there they will stay until June next year.

Sidney, ALL the new coleus I got this summer are doing great, I hope you are able to keep yours alive also :)) I haven't lost any so far. Winter is approaching quickly now here in Sweden.

Slowly, coleus are getting more popular over here in Europe. I have a great coleus friend in Germany who sends me plants, and also one in Norway and one in Belgium. Alas, Wouter (= mr. coleusfinder) in Holland has stopped collecting, he uses too much time with his new house in Thailand to be able to take care of coleus in Amsterdam. Well, well. I guess he misses them :))

My coleus room is overfilled, not much space for me to walk around when watering them, but that's how I want it to be! :D

That's wonderful Alice.
I am going to get mine all into pots as Pheadra suggested and make a small lean-to to overwinter in. I may just empty the glassed in back porch. I've invested in a mister, have a timer and a fan.
I need to make it automatic so I can leave it for days at a time.
I was offered a job in Detroit last Friday, but I had promises made.
I also see a neurosurgeon on the 19th. It took over 6 weeks to get that appointment.
It takes 2 pages to describe my neck abnormalities.
I do not let my neck hurt. I get some support for it and come on-line.

Hi! I just started growing coleus this year and have just fallen in love with all the colors. Lovey dubby Our desert definitely needs more color so I hope to expand my collection. We had a very hot dry summer so I had to water the plants everyday. What I need to know is how much cold can they take? We do get some freezing temps. The plants are in filtered shade. Love seeing your pictures. I was not sure where to post my picture but will try here. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks...................... Beautiful picture!

Coleus don't like cold at all. Mine tend to bite the dust at temps around high 30s. If you want to save them for next year, and you have a chance of frosty cold weather, it's best to over winter them inside. You can either take in the whole plant or start new ones from cuttings.

Thank you and thanks Karen for the information. I love your growing setup for your cuttings! I am rooting some now in cups of water. They certainly seem to put out roots quickly that way. Linda Smiling

I took lots of cuttings a couple of weeks ago, when our temps were flirting with the low 30s. Last year, I waited a little too long, so didn't want to risk that again.

My set-up is similar to Karen's, and I've already got roots poking through the bottom of my cell packs! This is only my 2nd time to root coleus cuttings, and I'm so excited by how easy it seems to be. I know there's a long way to go before spring, and much can happen between now and then but it's really fun to try.

My friend sent me a few cuttings several weeks ago. Meanwhile, my Mom got very sick so those cuttings have been in water for a while, (no time to stick them in pots). I planted them tonight. They did have some roots, but the stems don't look too great. I hope they didn't rot. This happens every time I try to root them in water. I have much better luck sticking them into potting soil.

I'm taking cuttings from the few I have left. We had such extreme heat this summer--108 for several days- and my housesitter didn't water as much as needed.
If anyone would want to send me cuttings for postage, send me a cmail! I'm especially looking for Peter Wonder. It used to be a common one in nurseries and this year I couldn't find it anywhere.
Hope this is the right place to post....
Cindi
