I usually keep the fertilizer 6 inches from the main stem and work it into the top couple inches of soil. I also sprinkle coffee grounds and some well aged compost the same way.

I agree Also I like to mix some into the planting hole. Tomatoes make fairly deep roots. Just so it doesn't contact the early roots.
