This is an idea that I saw on Facebook last year -- it was on the Botanical Interests Seed Packets page (which is a pretty interesting page, with lots of intriguing ideas, if you "do" Facebook).

I used a hoop house frame that I had purchased on ebay a couple of years back (the cover that came with the frame had deteriorated after one summer), and covered it with "remesh" (welded wire mesh for reinforcing concrete). I've planted cucumbers, gourds, mini pumpkins and acorn squash on either side, with some onion plants on the inside. So far this is where it's at --

Stayed tuned for future developments!

I think I may have put a few too many plants around this thing -- I'm having trouble getting everything trained on the trellis! I'm going to start trimming a few of the leaves off the bottom so that I can get to the vines themselves easier...

It's definitely an every day job steering growing vines to where you want them especially when lateral vines start growing. You can't skip a day! I learned that long ago with Morning Glory's. I've also learned in some cases where it doesn't really matter just to let them go where they want.

It's amazing how fast they grow!! And one of the gourds has spines on the stem like a cactus plant, so that's adding a whole new dimension to the project Hilarious!

The plants are really starting to go crazy now -- there are lots of little gourds in there, hope they have time to mature so I can dry them !

This project (or, as my husband has taken to calling it, my "overgrown chia pet") is now officially out of control! I did a LOT of pruning on it today...

I picked all my gourds today and pulled the vines off the trellis (no small task, I really had them woven into that wire!)

Thumb of 2014-10-13/Weedwhacker/eb7539

I think next year I'll grow more edible things and fewer gourds... and fewer plants overall! Smiling

Looks like the trellis would work for cucumbers.
