Yep, Ruellia. If it isn't the native one then watch out, it can be extremely invasive. Ask me how I know? I didn't listen to those who told me so & thought I could keep ahead of it. I couldn't.

I agree with plantladylin, it looks like Ruellia simplex. As flaflwrgrl said, it is an invasive, non-native species. I have it and it pops-up all over the place.

The leaves just reminded me of the R. simplex ... it is very invasive here in Florida and yet sooo many garden centers sell it!!

I don't think there are any ruellia that spread with tubers like bindweed (just an FYI), but they certainly do from seed. Seeds are ejected from the seed pods, usually at just the tiniest hint of turning brown. So if you can't remove the plant, cut off the seed pods well before they ripen. And be sure to discard in the garbage any remnant pods and not leave them lay. Even green seed might be old enough to finish ripening off the stem. Seedlings are difficult to pull, as they produce a deep root system from the get-go.

Yes, I left that caveat open because I am only familiar with a couple of the species that don't spread underground. There are many that I don't know. My seed advice likely holds true for all, though.

There are several commonly sold cultivars of Ruellia simplex that are sterile or nearly-sterile so they either don't set seeds or almost never do. 'Purple Showers' and the 'Mayan' series are examples. They can still spread vigorously by rhizomes but that can be controlled by growing them in a container, like you are doing. I'd keep a close eye on it to see if it develops seed pods or not. Then you'll know the level of caution you should take with this potential "wildfire."
