Just let me know which ones you want to buy next summer or the summer after that.

If you want to see pictures, use hostalibrary.org. Many are dwarf.

I received these today from Hostas Direct. These are considered Hosta Liner's, correct?

Cat, when are you coming over?

Yes, these are liners. Do not plant them in the ground.

@profesora I sent you a Tree Mail.

So I should pot them up this year?

If you plant them now they will be big by winter, no longer a liner. I think that was what made mine successful is that they grew all summer and fall and the roots were big by winter, they were no longer a liner even though they were a first year plant, mine were huge but I also am in a warmer zone than you.
Don't forget to fertilize in August, that is growing season for hosta roots, some people fertilize every week in August!

HD calls these 'Starter Plants' and they are bigger than a liner. I got these last fall when they had their clearance sale. LOL.

Susan, when I do plant hostas in the ground, I put 2-3 cups of alfalfa in the ground, and I do not fertilize for three years since the alfalfa is slow release.

I have alfalfa but it is just the pellets. That is not enough, is it?

Thanks Gerry! I was using the pellets till I found out they are GMO's. Crying
That means it has been sprayed with Roundup and that is not very good for my plants. I just do Milorganite now with the August hose end spraying of Miracle Grow.

To each his own....I have used alfalfa pellets with noticeable success for years on Hostas, Roses, and Iris and will continue to use them. I have never seen any ill effects. Many of my gardening friends use them also......They haven't done any harm here......I'm also getting older and have limited space so don't have room to mess with liners.....I may not live long enough to see them as mature plants...The wonderful thing about a garden is that we can be our own boss....if Mother Nature lets us. @Paul2032, Paul, they just started using GMO's on Alfalfa. Lot's of people have used it for years and years, but now you have to watch it and make sure you get the Organic if it is available in your area.

I followed the discussion about alfalfa and GMO this last winter, and I disagree with the conclusions that ATP members reached. Further, GMO alfalfa is in very limited production and the odds are that the inexpensive alfalfa at my local store is not in fact GMO.

Roundup is greatly misunderstood. It affects all plants that it contacts because it overfeeds them and kills the plants. A scientist at Purdue University was trying to create a fertilizer, but it killed all plants that it contacted. Later he and another scientist who was trying to create a herbicide, joined forces and created Roundup.

Paul your hosta photos are so lovely. What is the name of the hosta in the last photo that has long green leaves with white edging? The leaves are also very curly and the hosta is about in the middle of the photo.

Also, can you buy single liners and who has the best quality and lowest prices? I love streaked hostas, but they're so expensive.

Thanks for the kind comment Helen. The Hosta you asked about is Wheee and is a good one. I don't have many streakers and should check in to it. I've had a few streaked seedlings but all but one has stabilized to plants with margins.

Helen, I only buy wholesale, but some members here have bought single liners.
Even wholesale streaked hostas are expensive.

Virginiarose buys single liners. Ask her about it.

Paul I love looking at your Hostas gardens. They make me smile they are so pretty. You really have an eye for placement.

I am like you.....I figure at this age I need immediate or close to immediate gratification. I may not have 20 yrs to see the results. If I was in my 20s I would do liners. Plus usually you are not going to be in your first house for 20 yrs.

I have adult hostas from liners three to five years old. I stay away from the slow growers.

I had breast cancer last year, but I intend to live another 29 years.

I must admit to wanting instant gratification. My available planting space is nearly full so I am only adding a few select Hostas now. I plant for instant effect realizing that in a year or two they will be to crowded. I'm 71 with old blood clots in my legs, total knee replacements, and several other health problems. I take a handful of pills each day. 29 more years for me would make me 100. Thumbs down There are several Hostas that I grow that are 2 or 3 years old in my garden. I love the way they look now. I've seen Hostas of the same cultivar that are very mature and actually prefer the "middle-aged" ones.

Alfalfa pellets may be GMO but it doesn't mean that they've been sprayed with Roundup. Rather, some of the genes have been altered to make them resistant to Roundup. And that's a totally different thing.
