I am trying to add the daylily Lightning to my have list but when I do try and add it just Lightning will not show up on the list. About only half of the ones with Lightning in the name actually show up.

Thank you

And, if you have photo's please feel free to upload a couple to the database entry. We currently have no pictures of that particular Daylily. Sad

I will add it as soon as it blooms. Thanks for the help I kept looking on the right of the page and never saw that blue button on the left. Hilarious!

hazeleyes: We also need photo's of the leaves, stems ... when you upload a photo it will ask which gallery you want to put it, for instance:

entire plant
bloom
leaves
stem
etc.

So, feel free to upload photo's of other plant parts and of course the pretty flower when it blooms! Green Grin!

Oh Confused how confusing to have the word spelled 'lightning' and 'lightening' - are they both correct? I am guessing whoever named the hybrid selected the spelling they preferred. Shrug!

They aren't alternative spellings of the same word. They're two different words with two different meanings. Lightning, a noun, is the natural phenomenon usually accompanied by thunder. Lightening is the gerund or present participle of the verb "to lighten" (to become lighter or to make something lighter).

I know the difference between the two words, but thank you for the definition anyway.
I was referring to the confusion it causes to some people who may not know the difference.

Example:
Doing a quick search on the internet I find Heavenly White Lightening spelled as

Heavenly White Lightning by such sites as Learn2Grow, Oak Hill Daylilies, Marietta Gardens, Free State Daylily Society, ctdaylily.com, etc.

and spelled correctly as Lightening by daylily.net, daylilies.org, northern lights daylilies, extremedaylilies.com, Gardens In the Works, Metropolitan Daylily Society, etc.

That is a peculiar case, isn't it? It was registered as Heavenly White Lightening and I have to wonder whether the person who registered it was misspelling lightning. After all, how much can white lighten? Unless it becomes transparent. Big Grin I suspect it was misspelled when it was registered and the sites such as Learn2Grow aren't acknowledging the misspelled word. It's an odd case. Blinking

The hybridizer that created Heavenly White Lightening also created Black Lightning so who knows why he spelled it wrong. Shrug!

There are so many H. Hybrids with the word 'lightning' in their name and only a few using 'lightening'. The rules for naming H. hybrids say that deliberate misspellings which could cause confusion are not allowed, so this must not have been seen as a misspelling. Perhaps it was a case of the person(s) making the official decision while reading the application being too polite and not questioning the spelling. Shrug!

(By the way, I couldn't spell 'misspellings' properly without Spell Check Hilarious! ).

Back when I grew Phantasy Sapphire, Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Phantasy Sapphire') I never understood why the spelling of Phantasy was allowed. I don't know how many times I tried to write "Fantasy" on labels. Rolling my eyes. Google says Phantasy it is an alternate spelling, but back when I grew it, I had not heard of "phantasy". Maybe the hybridizer, Biaglow, had something else in mind when he gave it that spelling.

Often those that entered the registration info into the American Hemerocallis Society website spelled names wrong, different from what was actually written in the registration forms. I have corrected hundreds of them on here and am in regular contact with the registrar over there sending in my findings. They make the corrections eventually but it takes so much time for them to do it and sometimes they find that it was initially the hybridizer who made the error in the first place on his form. Shrug!

Maybe the spelling of Phantasy Sapphire came from the word 'phantasmagorical'? Catchy name for a daylily.
