I have wanted to grow Purple Maze, but hesitate because it is an ev. I am in zome 4B. On Marietta Gardens website, the picture of Patterns in Time looks very similar in color. It is an sev. So I guess there are 2 questions here: Are they similar in color? Is Purple Maze likely to grow in my zone, or is it quite tender?

I just compared the two in the plant database here, and they don't look similar in color. Patterns is more of a cream color. I guess that is a good illustration of how photos can be misleading! Could I grow it in a pot and drag it into our unheated garage to overwinter?

I have no experience with growing daylilies in the colder zones so anything I say will only be a guess, but maybe @Char or one of those others who are located there will be along to help.

I used to grow Purple Maze here in Central Ohio, and it did reasonably well here. The USDA says I am zone 6, but this past winter, we were down to -28.

Here is a photo of mine from back in 2008, unretouched. My photos are not very organized. If they were I might be able to find a newer photo or one with the scape in it.

I've never grown or seen Purple Maze so can not say how it would do in zone 4, either in the ground or potted. I have never tried overwintering daylilies in pots, maybe someone else will help out here with ideas and how to avoid problems.
I grew Patterns in Time for 5 or 6 years, no special care, it grew and bloomed well, nice daylily. The base colors of them are different according to the reg data as you may have seen when checking the database. Purple Maze as medium carrot orange and Patterns in Time as cream.

I live in zone 9, so I can't comment on hardiness. The base color of 'Purple Maze' is not an orange here, though - at least, not as I think of orange (carrots or otherwise). Maybe it is a melon.

It is still pretty, though, and I still like it, and that's even though it is suffering in a pot. (I'm going to find a garden spot for it this fall.)

I can't speculate about hardiness in any other zone than mine, but I can post photos of both as they grow here on the Louisiana gulf coast:

'Purple Maze' in my garden (it's in a pot in full sun, pretty much).... this image looks pinker than it is, it looks more melon-y.

Due to health issues, and caring for my elderly Mom, who lives with me, I had to cut back from nearly 1000 named cultivars to under 100. I am struggling to keep even those weeded now. There are so many I wish I still grew.....

I have Daylilies in pots that I leave outside year-round. We don't normally get too much in the way of winter cold, but two of the last three years have seen record cold temperatures for extended periods--meaning at or below 20 degrees--and they come right back like it was nothing. I'd say try it.

Maybe I will. If it outgrows its' pot I can divide and keep a little piece in a pot and plant the rest outdoors. Thanks.

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Paper Butterfly')

this one may be a suitable substitute for Purple Maze, it is semi evergreen and went through our nasty winter fine, blooming like crazy for me today. It has a similar look to it. It is also very affordable.

I grow Purple Maze in Zone 5b and it has done very well here.

I am a cold zone 5, and it has done ok for me. Purple maze Is more peachy here. I tried daylilies in pots one winter, it was a disaster, lost them all. Had them in my garage, then They got aphids and rust, so I put them outside to kill off the nasties, but they were well protected.

Spring was wet with fluctuating temps, and every single one rotted and died. I found out later that I should have tipped the pots on their side at that point, apparently the water and frozen dirt kept them too wet. Haven't tried it since.

Thank you all! I have grown some ev that do very well here; worth a try, what's to lose but $$$ huh? I do have Paper Butterfly and I love it but I want one that is peach/apricot/orangey.

I should send you some of my soil ... PB is much more peach/apricot/orangey here than my camera or software can show.
