So I cleaned up the plants and sprayed with THIOMYL Systemic Fungicide yesterday.
(Takes me awhile to do that since I have sciatica.)

Think I'll make of list of which ones fared best.
The new plants that were given out by Petit and Nicole during Daylily Mecca seem to have come through in fine shape.

I did buy a bottle of Dawn Ultra specially for insecticidal spray. It is not antibacterial, only the hand soap is. It has the ingredient Triclosan and that is found in hand soap and is NOT in my dish liquid.

Remember this is the stuff they use to clean wildlife, it is safe for animals. http://www.dawn-dish.com/us/da...

Here is the MSDS, on the second page (section III) it says tricolosan @ .01% is ONLY in the Dawn hand soaps.

Susan, such awesome info/pic, thanks!!

You've prompted me to jot down Dawn Ultra non-anti-bacterial on my upcoming shopping list. Even just to stop aphids from eating up my seedlings, it's nice knowing that an effective yet safe source is available to do the job. Kudos to them for helping to save wildlife with it, too.

Thank You!

Your are very welcome, I was using it for aphids too. Thumbs up

I also used Dawn in a spray bottle to stop scale that had managed to somehow get on my indoor coffee plant.

Looking at the nearly empty bottle of Dawn Susan posted, and wondering "what happened to the rest of it?"

Just learned of this as another thing to use on rust: Nickel Plus

"Daylilies:
Nickel nutrition will improve plant resistance to rust. Apply
3pints/100 gallons of water (1 Tablespoon/gallon) at weekly
intervals for 3 weeks starting in early spring when plants
begin active growth. After the initial 3 sprays, apply every 14-
21 days until the plants start blooming. Retreat in the fall
when weather conditions favor rust development. "

The list of chemical applications will become very long, and those industrial chemicals are only readily available for commercial growers to buy through chemical companies.

http://www.nickelplus.biz/id27...

Doing a search of the daylily forum threads will bring you a number of results just for this one chemical alone:

The thread "A few questions...." in Daylilies forum
The thread "Rust Resistance" in Daylilies forum
The thread "I think I have rust." in Daylilies forum

Maybe it would help fellow commercial growers who use industrial chemicals to mask rust to start a thread on what and where to obtain them? Shrug! Thumbs up

I haven't used it this year because we just haven't ordered any but we used it last year and we use it all season long. I'm not sure why they say to stop when plants start blooming but it didn't bother the buds or blooms any.

There was research done and it documented what was used and what ratios was used but I can't find it on the internet at the moment. But if I remember correctly using Nickel Plus alone will not keep rust away, it was best used in conjunction with chemicals like Propiconazole and I can't remember which other ones.

Here is the abstract of one study done but I can't seem to find the full article

Yes it would be helpful and there are other threads that we have said what we have used and where we get it if I'm not mistaken; could have been on another message site. However, most commercial growers buy it locally at either chemical companies or suppliers. Most of these products are available on the internet from various companies or on ebay for anyone to buy and can be found if you Google the product or chemical name. Some of what I use I Google each time I need it and order from whoever is cheapest at the time.

I agree There are lots of other, newer, more recently tested and documented best-result chemicals ... but it would be hard for commercial growers to find them all in the various threads that go back over the years. A new, dedicated thread might help everyong to find and review them all in one place. Thumbs up

I'm just catching up with this thread and can answer a few questions. Becky asked from what country daylily rust originated. I'm not sure if the question is about where it originally evolved, or from where did it come to North America around the year 2000. The latter isn't known other than that it would have originated from somewhere in Asia and somehow ended up in Costa Rica as well. Daylily rust is native to several countries in Asia. The first official documentation was from Siberia in the 1800's but it must have been around long before that.

Becky also asked how a garden that has only grown daylilies from seed might have got rust. Since you're in Florida, it could have come in on the wind from other infected daylilies. To be sure landscape daylilies don't have rust you'd have to carefully examine the undersides of many leaves because a resistant daylily may not show many pustules. It is theoretically possible to bring daylily rust in on seeds from an infected garden, but normal seed starting methods would make it difficult for such rust to cause an infection even if the spores survived long enough on the surface of the seeds to remain viable.

For Ultra Dawn, I would agree to avoid antibacterial. For IPM scouting of turf we generally use lemon-scented "dish soap" because it is supposed to work better for insects. The procedure is to pour dilute lemon dish soap onto an area of turf and count the insects that it drives to the surface. I have to say that even with "regular" lemon dish soap it makes the earthworms very unhappy, they come out of the ground squirming and writhing. I don't know if it seriously harms them. I always have a sprayer of plain water with me to wash the soap off the turf so that it doesn't burn in the sun, and I always stop to wash off the earthworms as well, don't know if it makes them feel better but it makes me feel better that I tried to help!

For pest control I use a commercial insecticidal soap, like Safers, that is made specifically for plants. It is organic (OMRI listed) whereas "big brand" kitchen dish soap would not technically be considered organic if that's important to anyone (and is not really soap but detergent).

The article that mentions nickel not being effective on its own was the link that Michele gave earlier to the Dong, Jeffers and Buck article, which says: "Nickel has been reported
to reduce daylily rust development but it was not effective in our field trials". They did find it did better when combined with chlorothalonil, but I don't believe it was tested with any other fungicides so I don't know if one can necessarily extrapolate to a benefit in combination with fungicides in general. This research was also published in a shorter form in the AHS Daylily Journal of Summer 2011.

And that's my two cents worth Smiling

There was another article other than the one I linked about the use of Nickel Plus that detailed it more (may have been a second research) as the owner/maker of Nickel Plus was involved also and listed in that one. It had more detailed info and charts with the amounts, which products, and other info listed and the outcome of all of them. It's been a couple of years since I read it so it must be buried somewhere on the internet and I just can't find it; I came across it by accident the first time anyway.

As Sue mentioned, Safer soap is good.
I used some and it really seems to help on contact rust.

Need to buy some more to use along with all the other stuff in my growing arsenal.

You're welcome Becky. Michele, in the Dong et al article the reference to nickel being previously effective is to Nickel Suppresses Daylily Rust, Puccinia Hemerocallidis on Susceptible Daylilies, Hemerocallis Spp. in Greenhouse and Field Trials by Reilly, Crawford and Buck. It's the one you posted the abstract for, and that's all there is to it, there's no full article available. There is a chart of daylily rust pustules per leaf of 'Mauna Loa' in response to nickel treatment in the book Mineral Nutrition and Plant Disease, Datnoff et al., APS Press, and this appears to be from Reilly et al, same study for which there's an abstract only. In this they only compared nickel treatment to propiconazole treatment.

So I looked on Google Scholar to see if I could find the article you're thinking of, might it be this one, although Crawford (Nickel Plus) isn't named on this one?: http://www.ipni.net/ppiweb/pbr...
