Solved: Sensitive Fern

We got it out and it's at the dump but I'd like to know what it was. Thanks.

It's the huge leaves coming out of the daphne and hydrangea.

Fern. I think Kent identified this one for me...off to look.
Does it look similar to this one Pirl?
The thread "Unknown fern" in Plant ID forum
Sensitive Fern (Onoclea sensibilis)

Looks a lot like Sensitive Fern to me also. Here's the map showing county distribution in N.Y. http://plants.usda.gov/java/co...

Thanks, everyone!

It did look like the Sensitive Fern so I'll mark this solved. I hope it's happy at the dump.

Next time I'll take photos of the fronds. It looked like a monster fern to me but wasn't that difficult to get out from between the roots of the other plants - grows in clumps we tugged at and they came out.

Thank you all.

Thanks for the alert. I used Preen and today I heavily mulched the area. I doubt Preen could stop it but will follow your advice and keep checking the area. I'm guessing any new roots would love the mulch!
