Lin, (& everyone else), ditch the wasp spray. A fellow ATP member told me about a non toxic wasp spray. I have road tested it & it WORKS!
A little dishwashing liquid, alcohol & water, mix it all together. What I did to get nests under the eves where you can't really reach with a spray bottle unless you get a ladder; is put the mix in a pump garden sprayer, adjust the nozzle so you get a nice spray that reaches far enough & go to town. Knocks them right down! Lately we've been getting wasps building nests in the van. They go up under where the side doors slide or where the back door lifts up & build nests in there. Well, I don't want to be spraying soap in the car (b/c you have to open the door to be able to get to them) so I just used plain, straight alcohol. Works a treat!

Ann, thank you for this great tip! I hate using chemicals but when it comes to wasps it was the only thing I knew to kill them and the nest. Does the alcohol/soap/water mixture kill the wasps or just force them to fly away? I'm going to definitely try this method!!

It kills them Lin. You need to do it at dusk though when they are all home for the evening, otherwise, the ones that were out foraging will come home later & just continue the nest. I hate using poison too, especially with the dog. We get wasps in the corners of the porch ceilings & if you use poison, it just falls down onto the tile or concrete. If the dog walks through, she gets it on her paws. Not good. Plus, with poison, you have to wait till it's really calm or else it blows back on you. No worries with detergent & alcohol --- it's not going to hurt you.
