Look at this photo belonging to chickhill.

Hey Linda @chickhill, how is this plant doing for you, and how long have you had it?

I see @clintbrown is growing it also. How is it doing for you Clint?

Love the colors on this and the yellow blooms look great with the dark foliage.

It really is eye catching in a container, growing with other plants.

I may have to table this dream seems from what is being said. I do not know of any other sedum that could replace C-Ball for the look in the mini garden.

This fall I have purchased Candy/ Chocolate Drop and Sedum Orbit Bronze. Unless they look a lot better next year I will push them to the back of the garden. They look butt ugly to me right now. Rolling on the floor laughing

Do anyone remember Black Jack? I had that one on life support for 10 yrs. I moved it here from my old garden and took cuttings and I finally gave up on it and it must have noticed that I hated it because it died a year later.

Yes Cinta, I remember that one. Think I still have one stem of it in the sedum garden, not pretty. You have to try 'thunderhead', it's beautiful. 'Chocolate Drop' has never been stunning for me and 'Orbit Bronze' is new here in my garden.

That is funny you have one stem. That was all I had every Spring. I would break that stem to root and I had two ugly stems all summer.

Chocolate Ball may go by way of Black Jack with the nurseries not ordering because I have not seen it on the sites that had it last year. Shame too because it looked so pretty when I first put it in the garden.

Mine from that photo is still going strong. Have moved it to a bigger space, bright high shade with little evening sun.

Today it is abt. 17" x 11". I kept making cuttings in a 9 hole nursery tray, planted this spring to that area.
It doesn't grow as fast as other sedum.

Well it is certainly doing well for you Linda. I think I gave it to much sun and not enough water.

Secret to growing Stonecrop (Sedum polytrichoides 'Chocolate Ball'), KEEP IT IN THE SHADE, and protected. I planted it in this pot with perennial japanese painted ferns, and it survived the summer and winter. Now it's coming out of dormancy and starting to grow again.

First time I planted it, lasted for a bit, but then, dead...dunzo! Chalked it up to 'operator error.' Then read posts that everyone else struggled with it... so bought it again and experimented. Split it up into various spots with more protection... lasted longer, but then died again.
Third time, I decided to go rogue with almost complete shade. Consistancy of moisture (not too much, but constant moisture like the painted ferns prefer) also helps. Dont let the soil dry out.

Here's another pic where I planted a little piece in a shade bed (just to see if it would survive the winter). This is North side of house and the emerging bleading hearts grow 4-5ft tall, completely covering everything in this bed...ignored and left completely to the elements. It's just showing new growth.

Definitely try it again, and test this method. If anyone has a green thumb, its you!
