In the South as in other places, bagworms can be a serious problem. Every year they defoliate and destroy many valuable evergreens and other landscape plants.
I've had them for years in the 3 red cedars by my house. In one season they stripped all the lower branches of needles. I've smashed as many as I could and I even found one climbing on the trash can with its cocoon around it.
