The first problem is that the deer get used to the scent. Next is that when we spray in May the buds on lilies keep growing and the newest growth isn't protected. I can't see where any gardener can spray all the newest growth every single day.

I really spray like a mad woman until July.
After July they can have the garden.
I used to start in March but now I wait until May and naively believed if I sprayed the ground around certain areas the smell would keep the deer going in another direction

Funny how we think the scent will linger but it doesn't work. It gets downright depressing.

I've been doing well by using trellises as blockades but there are far too many ways for the deer to get to the plants and I don't want the armed prison look either. The squirrels don't really bother me since they mainly just bury their nuts and forget about them. Rabbits do much more damage eating the lily leaves. Blood meal works best here against the rabbits.

Liquid fence still seems to work pretty well, it's just leaving ugly white spots that make the plants look ugly. I tried Deer Off with no obvious effect. I use RepelsAll granular too. Someone mentioned a systemic one called Repellex. I might try that next year.

We've lived in this house for over 30 years, and I just have never seen as many rabbits as we have this year. There are generations of them, every possible size from tiny to really big and fat and well fed.

I use bird netting on my tomatoes to protect from deer. They still eat oddball stems that grow out of the net, but it's no big deal. The majority of the plants are covered with the net and they don't bother them.
