Hornimans Museum & Gardens

By NEILMUIR1

Hornimans Museum was one man's dream, and he fulfilled it. Fredrick John Horniman was a tea trader who started collecting Natural History and other artifacts from all over the world for his family home in southeast London in 1860. However his collection outgrew his home, so he had a new Museum designed and built in 1898, which was opened to the Public in 1901. At first it was for Natural History specimens and musical instruments, but he acquired art & crafts, fossils and Egyptian mummies. He donated the museum and gardens to the people of London, "as a free gift to the people of London forever for their recreation, instruction and enjoyment." It is now as it was then, a free museum and gardens.

Dear Cherie, thank you for your comments. You are up early, but so will I be on Thursday as it is Chelsea Flower Show Day for me! Thousands of pictures and a good time hopefully!
It is too hot here, they say it is going to be 28C today which is about 86F, far too hot to do anything at all! You watch it will rain all week from tomorrow for Chelsea!
I was trying to work it out the other day; if I did an Article once a week on every different park, open space in London and the suburbs, i would have to live till about 85!
Regards.
Neil.
p.s mothers Weigelia, well one of them.

Neil you are so right that we often neglect the sights in our own area that many tourists travel to see.
Thanks for the glimpse at the beautiful Horniman museum and gardens.

Just wonderful Neil. I really look forward to your articles. I always feel like I have been along with you. What a marvelous place. I'm so impressed that it is free to the public. Really brightens my day to know that such a wonderful place exists. I would go every week if I lived in London to watch the seasons change!!! And to visit poor Mr. Dodo as a reminder of our mission to protect our earth.

Dear Kathy, i am glad you think like me. There are hundreds of species and lists in the Museum of things that have become Extinct! You get worried when you see Tigers etc. on it or near it, as I love Tigers!
Regards.

Dear Charleen, I am glad you enjoyed your trip of the Museum and Gardens!
Like most places it does have picnic areas, toilets, access for the Disabled etc. so it is great place for a day out with the children, grandchildren, especially as it like most places and free.
There are quite a few pubs near by; so you can have lunch and a pint and go in and out of everywhere as you please. It is a lot bigger than a few pictures show. I only put a bit of the Natural History on the Article, as I would have been their all day just in the Museum.
Regards.
Neil.
p.s. I love this blue\purple hardy Garanium!

Neil, I get so deeply saddened over any species that becomes extinct. I can hardly look at the lists, it is so depressing. But the 400 orchids cheer me up!!! A fine and tenuous balance for sure! Ha, ha! Neil, don't forget that we would love to see some Chelsea flowers at the orchids cubit!!!!!!

Dear Charleen, don't worry about that! That is why the British always plant lots of big shrubs everywhere!
Sue has put some more lovely pictures on Alnwick with a castle for Cherie!
Plus some on great Historical Parks as well!
