I'm thinking the way your house is situated you don't get much shade in your backyard until the shadow of your house encroaches on it. Here, my west side backyard neighbors have a couple of huge trees that right now are completely shading my backyard. I can usually find an area to work out there after 5 pm. I haven't checked on my succulents yet... I am using a bamboo shade screen (one of those meant for windows) and some other things to shade my containers, mostly those netted flat trays leaning against containers to break up the sun rays.

I wait till the sun is actually down to go out for my daily walk (I really can't take the direct sun for very long either). Right now it is about 90°.

It is now up to 93° here. In this kind of weather I can only garden in the mornings and evenings after it starts cooling down.

Julia it looks like you might need to put slug bait out. The blemishes on the sedum leaves look like slug damage. They make the same type of blemish on the sempervivum. I have been finding slugs in the semp and sedum beds this last week.
Nice collection of tall sedum.
How old is your Blue Pearl plant? Mine took 2 years to establish a strong root system. It is doing great this year, even in a mostly sun location. I think it also really loves the sandy loam composted soil in the bed. I am finding that I have to water more this year with all the high temps and no rain. I leave the sprinkler for about an hour, sometimes more, to water really deep, driving the roots deeper to seek water. I let the bed dry for a week or more, depending on how the soil looks.

I am going to try using this sandy loam as a potting soil to see how the plants do. Maybe re-pot Pinky?

Did you find Touchdown Teak?

I wondered what those blemishes were, thought it might be heat scorch but I try not to water when the sun is on them. Will slug bait in there today, they will be busy laying eggs soon.. The 'Blue Pearl" is 2 years old but think the location is too hot. The soil they are in is sandy but there is a tree in that bed with roots. Was fine when I first put this in but the tree is getting bigger.

I have not been out of the house since getting home so no have not looked.

Just came in, almost finished with the mowing. When I finish weeding the beds I will be putting slug bait down. This will be my third time this year for baiting, one more time this fall should do it.

You could be right about the tree roots taking the water. You might try making a raised bed in that area, that would help by giving them deeper soil away from the tree roots.

Not another bed but fix up a bed by the front door. Not this year though, I'm still weeding, I can't work in this hot weather. Thank goodness today is cooler.

I found ,Touchdown Teak, through Mama. She had a few left from her spring co-op! Hurray!

I wonder if this is going to be another one of those sedum that has trouble getting started?

Group hug I tip my hat to you. Just reading this thread. Good info on Blue Pearl-no wonder the plug I planted in full sun fell over dead. Have the other plug in pot w/part shade. Going to start putting sun/shade on tags because I can't remember like I used to. Hilarious! Confused
Wonder if coffee grounds would work for sedum? Going to put grounds around them now, mine also have the damaged leaves as you all have shown.
Never tried the drying on sedum cuttings, will try that also.
Love the color on the Jade sedum.

Linda I really like that photo of S. 'Jade'. I may have to see if I can find that one.

I put all the sedum cuttings on the covered deck to give them protection from the sun. Once they have made a strong plant they can go into full sun, at least here they can.
I've never tried using coffee grounds around the sedum. Let us know how that does for you.

All of the cuttings are coming along nicely.

I read on another forum to try used coffee grounds around hosta for slugs. Of course I found the thread after the snails eat my hosta. Will try it again next spring before slugs hit to see if it really does work. Saving grounds for next year.
Checked my Dynomite, Teak, Thundercloud and Blue Pearl cuttings-all have rooted {snipped and put in potting soil} want to try the "callous" way next time.
