cat, almost all of my iris beds are just iris. i do have one bed under a mimosa tree that has big orange poppy that are mixed in and bloom with the iris most of the time. they look great mixed in.

Carol, one lady I buy irises from always sends a little baggie of poppy seeds along with the order and instructions on how to sow them. I have been giving them away as I did not think of sewing them among the irises. I may try that.

Wait a few years and I will be able to send you some cute freckled lily bulbs.

My son dug up most of the front lawn and we are planting iris. I got many of my new named iris in and many rhizomes from around the yard transplanted. I sowed old flower, basil and cilantro seeds right over them. I think it will be lovely having flowers amongst the iris, especially since the iris tend to be so early.
Good reason to have a CRV.

The "lawn" used to be mostly violets and some grass. The violets were moved to the evergreen garden against a wall.

My son Nich, transplanting violets. He later planted 2 Bleeding Hearts and maybe 1000 NoID, purple, yellow and purple bi-colored iris we got free off of Craigslist. Perhaps next Spring they can be identified.

Davy the cat often keeps us company.

I think I am going to make it an island/bed (not sure what they are really called). The type you see raised a little and then mulched in front yards. Not really sure if I am explaining it right. I need to move some of my own iris also so what's better than an Iris Island, lol.

What a show you will have when they all bloom! I cant wait for the photos. I know it is a lot of work but can't you just feel the satisfaction of creating something beautiful that is as enduring as irises in the garden. Great job!

An iris island sounds lovely Cat. I have seen iris islands in different sizes and shapes. I think the mulch around the island helps keep the grass from going right into the beds. It also helps with the run off of soil in a heavy downpour.

Yes, I keep envisioning it and I can't wait to get it finished. It was really easy to talk my husband into it. So easy it was actually a little scary.
