The Blythe Hill Tavern

This is one way our community can say thank you to a Landlord with passion. He loves golf, horse racing, Gaelic football, rugby, soccer, but more than that, he has won Pub Of The Year for his beer for two years running now. What they fail to mention is his hard work and passion to make everyone welcome, young or old. Children are welcome in his garden; his love of his garden and those who visit it indicate to us the depth of his family values.

Neil, that was wonderful. My husband and I both enjoyed this article. I felt like we were right there with you as you gave us a tour of your favorite pub. Thank you so much for the tour.

Dear Dave, again I am lost for words when you reply! However I stick to what I know and what hopefully people like. In that, it should be easy to read and people like good pictures. I could of course put things with their Botanical names on, which I do when needed. Like good food it should be simple and well presented, let the food do the talking.
I do have a bone to pick with you however, as you did not tell me if your Magnolia you had ordered came?
The last time you saw my tree fern it was just coming out, so here is an update.
Regards.
Neil.

Indeed it did. 2 of the Ann varieties, actually, as well as 2 'Little Gem' varieties. All are in the ground and putting out new growth. I'm looking forward to blooms next year.

Wonderful again, Neil.

Is this a pub near you? How old is the pub/building. Loved the carving in one of the pictures. Sure do have an affinity for old carved woods, either furniture of architectural.

Thanks again.

Now when is that get together?
Hugs
Nancy

Dear Dave, great news on your magnolias. I have been reading your own Articles as I studied toxicology in relation to plants, it was part of my Degree!
I admit to having upset a few Designers for planting things around children's and animals areas that are toxic! There are a lot of things that are toxic that we never think of.

Dear Nancy, the first legal license to the pub was in 1862. I say this tongue in cheek as it was known that there was a Drinking Establishment there, but it did like a lot of other places not have a Legal License. This goes back to the Gin wars and other events in the 1700s, however when the Croydon canal was built 1780-1809 they needed bricks, so took the clay off the top of Blythe Hill Fields. It is mentioned in there as an establishment in 1790 but was not legal then!
Unfortunately it got hit quite badly during the Second World War by the dreaded V1s or Doodlebugs as we called them. Basically the British tricked the Germans into believing that the V1s were not hitting London, so the Germans changed the unmanned Rockets flight path, so they hit around here and not central London.
So the first recorded mention of the pub was in 1790!
Hope this helps!
Regards.
Neil.

Neil,

That is so great that it has survived since the 18th century. I just love your old buildings and history. Around here, (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), anything before 1920 is old. Is that a laugh or what?

We, in America, have been so fortunate that we have never had a 'Modern' war on our soil. To have historic treasures, not to mention lives, lost is unimaginable. It's wonderful the amount of time, energy and money that has been spent for restoration. You all deserve a lot of credit.

Hugs,

Nancy

That's terrible, Neil.

Go get some spray paint and remedy the situation!

I know I probably ask too many questions, but....but what is the QEI prison tree?
