Hosta 'Stained Glass' smells so good. It smells like Honeysuckles. I've been going out every day and picking a bloom to smell! It's a beautiful Hosta too. It's my favorite. What's your favorite fragrant Hosta?

Guacamole has a nice fragrance to it, but my favorite fragrant is probably Moonlight Sonata. It's sending up scapes now. I didn't realize until last year when I sniffed the flowers that it even had a scent. It loses its blue wax and becomes a nice shiny medium-dark green. The picture is from the beginning of June.

I will never forget coming home from a long business trip and when I stepped out of the cab and approached my front door the fragrance wrapped their arms around me. The cab driver that was carrying my luggage said he did not know that lilies were still blooming in Sept.

The fragrance was coming from plantaginea, ‘Fried Bananas’, Fragrant Bouquet, I had several of these plant around the front porch. It was a warm night in Sept. So those are the three that are my favorite. I cannot pick just one because together all I have to do is open my door in the evening and the fragrance surrounds me.

Clint- I like your question: favorite fragrant hosta? But there could be several answers. Favorite plant, appearance throughout the growing season?
Most fragrant? Most vigorous through adverse conditions (drought, cold or hot temperatures, etc.)? I have a fairly large collection of fragrant hostas, and I would be giving different answers according to different criteria. Here in Minnesota, my fragrants are just now sending up the flower scapes, although one ('Dark Shadows') is already finished. That one is far from the "most" fragrant, but is very tough and is a beautiful clump. I started a personal project 2 years ago, of
evaluating degree of fragrance according to my sense of smell. As each cultivar bloomed I rated it as 1) very fragrant, 2) moderately fragrant, and 3) slightly fragrant. But 2012 was a poor year to start this project as I had moved many cultivars from the main hosta area to my new Fragrant Hosta Glade, and some of those didn't bloom. Last year I also had inconsistent bloom because of 2 years of very dry conditions. So this year I hope to get a decent "sniff" test for every cultivar! Then I will be able to compare my opinions on those that I have a record of and see if my opinion changes from one year to the next.
But I agree with all of the choices mentioned so far, and I especially like 'Moonlight Sonata' on all criteria. And 'Guacamole' is certainly high on my list of favorite hostas overall, both fragrant and non-fragrant. I'll try and come up with a "top-ten" list once they have started blooming, and that will be difficult to narrow them down to only ten!

Hi, Clint
I ran across this, not much going on in the hosta forum. In a few months when the pips start showing up that will change!

Is there a database somewhere of ones with fragrance? Like Blue hosta list?

If you Google "fragrant hostas" you'll find lots of links, some more useful than others. You might also want to check out Don Rawson's Hosta lists - http://www.hostalists.org/ There are lists of hostas with all sorts of characteristics and one of those is fragrance. http://www.hostalists.org/

Thank you, Ann
I had been on the Library but hadn't found much for fragrance. Happy New Year!
