The Magic in Yarrow

By Sharon
July 22, 2014

There was magic, she said, in the plants we gathered from the mountain. Magic plants had three reasons for living: They gave us food, they gave us medicine, and they gave us beauty. She said yarrow was truly magic because it was also a plant that could live with very little water. To me, the very best part about yarrow was that it was so old it had a story to tell. That made it even more magical. I loved Aunt Bett's stories.

Sharon, I was curious about the location of your story. Some of my people were from Mayfield but long before my time.

I live just about 30 miles from Mayfield now, but I grew up in southeast KY in the Appalachians and that's where my Aunt Bett stories take place.

What can I say? Those of us at a certain age, that didn't grow up in cities, love recalling a simpler time.

I think you're right, Carol, it's the memories and the feelings we had during those years that we cling to.

Sharon - Your Aunt Bett was such a special woman! I can only wish that I had had such a person in my life when I was a child. I always enjoy reading your stories and it's always educational, too! I hope you do get a book published. You are a rare storyteller! I'd buy your book. Thumbs up

Becky, thanks so much!! You've been around as long as I've been writing, you've probably already read most of them. But I'll for sure let you know anyway; it will be nice to get them all together in one place. Thumbs up

Sharon - I've read many of your stories, but I know I've not read all of them as they are scattered between various forums and websites. And I can never remember the usage of all those plants. I hope you add the usages also in your book! Perhaps a reference in the back of the book or maybe even do chapters about the various plants and memories. I'd love to have some of Aunt Bett's recipes! I hope your book will include some of those, too! I would love it as a storytelling book, but also as a plant reference book. Thumbs up

Sharon, your stories always make me feel as if I am right there beside you. I could feel your excitement and joy as a child and was engrossed from beginning to end.

I love the story about Achilles army using it to heal wounds. It is a shame it didn't work on his heel!

I have some 'Tutti Frutti' yarrow and it is one of the longest blooming plants in my garden. I just cut it back last week hoping it would send up more blooms before fall gets here. I must get more of this started throughout the garden.
