The Crystal Palace & The Park (Part 1)

The Crystal Palace was a massive iron and glass structure built for the Great Exhibition in 1851, originally it was in Hyde Park, a Royal Park, in London. Prince Albert came up with the idea of showing the world Britain's industrial revolution. It was designed by the famous Sir Joseph Paxton; in 1851 when the Exhibition closed, he came up with the idea of moving this colossal building to Penge Place Estate in southeast London. Punch magazine in a satirical moment called it the "Crystal Palace" and the name stuck, so this part of Sydneham became known as Crystal Palace. This exhibits were in fact from all over the world; the USA, Egypt, France & Germany to name but a few. The displays were set into categories; raw materials, machinery, manufacturers and fine arts. It was too big to be financially viable and on a fateful night in 1936 disaster struck.

Loved the walk, including good info and stunning photos--- really like that Monkey Puzzle tree...(Do monkeys get puzzled when they climb in the tree branches??!)
I didn't know that you had Sphinx statues over there, or dinosaur statues--- which my kids would've loved when they were younger! I think the architecture you showed is amazing. Thanks for sharing with us; all that walking should've made you physically fit! Thumbs up

Dearest Connie, I am very fit thank you. Monkey's cannot climb the trees, or so it is said. They are an ancient plant coming from Norfolk Island, and I love them.
We do have Sphinx's and Cleopatra's Needle on the side of the River Thames. London is more than you think!
Hope the family and your goodself are well?
Kindest Regards.
Neil.

Our family's fine; everyone's just been busy; Parker (nephew) started back to school this past week; John and Austin (son) been working alot; and Joshua (other son) is looking for a job, since he doesn't ship out for the Navy till December. Plus, I'm having to help some with my daughter's wedding plans--- late November... It's been so Hot outside I have to force myself to go out to water plants.
Is the Monkey Puzzle tree related to the Norfolk Island Pine tree, which is tropical, and we have them here? I have one in a big pot, but some people have them growing in their yards--- Our neighbor has one that is taller than their house!!! Whistling

Dear Connie, yes the Araucaria araucana comes from Chile and is a relation, except it is cold hardy! It would have to be to live over here!
Cleopatra's needle is this huge stone column that looks like a needle. It has Hieroglyphics on it and was given by the Egyptian Government to the people of London. It was erected on the side of the River Thames Hundreds of years ago and has stood there ever since.
Hugs.
Neil.

What does it say on Cleopatra's Needle anyway? (the translation)... did they give it to London for any particular reason? (I know I could look it up, but Neil, you are so full of information about your country, that I don't even Need to look it up, as I'm sure you know the answer, plus some more interesting tidbits!) Rolling my eyes.
